Fall From Grace

* * *

I already have my coat on when she walks into the office the next morning.

“Do you have court this morning?” she asks curiously. She knows my schedule, so she must be confused.

I grab the coffee out of her hand. “No, we are headed to the prison. We have a meeting with Phillips.”

“Is he actually going to tell you more of what he knows? I can’t believe he doesn’t want to tell his lawyer everything.”

I grab my briefcase. “He doesn’t want his name destroyed, so he is keeping things close to his chest. But as I’ve told him numerous times, he needs to tell me so I can save his ass from multiple life sentences.”

“Why do I need to go?” she asks while tightening the belt on her coat.

“Because you seem to be able to pull information out of people so well.”

She purses her lips. “Okay.”

I give her more details on what Phillips has told me so far on our drive to the prison where he is being held. Grace takes notes and I can’t help but wonder what she is wearing under that coat. She has pants on today. Maybe she is wearing another tempting one-piece. I highly doubt she stopped playing this little game of ours, not after I clearly won with the strawberries.

She’s all business on our drive. I should be paying attention but flashes of our night together flood my mind. The way she let me own her body, the way she fit perfectly with mine, the noises she made. Fuck, when I sucked on her ear the other day when I pushed her against the door she made the tiniest moan and it had need flooding my dick.

When I found out who she was, I should have come clean with Owen and told him no. That I couldn’t work with her. But I was thinking with my dick. And now she’s thrown me off my game. All I do is think about her. My lips on every inch of her body. My cock down her throat. I bet she would take me deep too. I can see the deviance in her.

I somehow answer all her questions without pulling the car over and fucking her. But I don’t know how much longer I’ll last. How much longer I will be able to hold myself back from her. It will fuck up everything. With her, her brother, hell, probably my career. So I take the control back and swallow my desires down. I put the mask on I wear every day in court. The mask I’ve been wearing every day since Tiffany walked out on me. I can do this. I can be the man with no feelings.

We are led into a private room to talk to Phillips. He is already sitting at the table. His eyes focused on Grace. I know the man is a dick. I know he cheated on his wife often with his secretaries and interns. But I know he wouldn’t go as far as killing his family. His wife had no problem with the affairs because she had just as many of her own. It’s all fucked up. But I have no reason to judge my clients. I just need reasonable doubt.

He licks his lip as Grace slides her coat off and I want to punch him in the face. I know she looks beautiful today. Her honey hair in loose curls down her back, her bottle-green eyes accented by dark eyeliner, her lips plump and kissable with a sheer layer of gloss. But when I look over at her, I see what has Phillips focused on her. I nearly lose my shit.

I should have known she didn’t quit the game. That she would be tempting me with her outfit again today, especially after what I pulled yesterday. But I didn’t think when I made her accompany me to the prison. When I should have known better.

She is wearing a sheer ivory blouse with a black lace bra underneath. It leaves nothing to the imagination as I look at her from behind. You can see every detail of her skin. Including the three freckles on the back of her left shoulder in the shape of a mountain peak. Possession takes over me as I see the predatory look in Phillips’s eyes and I want to take Grace’s jacket and wrap it back around her.

But I keep my mask on. I pretend not to care. I walk up to her and grab her coat from her and nearly breathe a sigh of relief when I see the front of the shirt. Yes, it’s still see-through but a black bow hangs from the neckline, the ribbons of the bow settling in her cleavage covering the swell of her breasts.

She smirks at me when she catches me staring, then turns around and takes a seat at the table as I hang both our coats on a coat rack.

I spend most of the hour-long meeting with my fist clenched against my thigh, trying not to jump across the table and strangle Phillips for the looks he is giving her. She ignores him for the most part. I let Grace take the lead, asking questions and digging deep for anything that we can use to win this case. I add my two cents and my questions every now and then but I am so mesmerized by Grace I start to wonder what happened. Why someone with such integrity and charisma, who is clearly good at her job, left it all behind.

“That’s time,” the guard says, who was standing by the door.

Grace thanks Phillips and watches the guard escort him out.

“God, he is a creep.”

“You noticed?”

She snorts as she puts her notebook into her bag. “If I had known that you were taking me here today, I wouldn’t have worn this shirt. I felt his eyes boring into my tits.”

“He wasn’t the only one,” I mutter.

“But it seems only fair.”

I clench my jaw and grab our jackets, helping Grace slide hers on. My hands grazing over her hips as I step away.

“Well we should get back to the office. I want to go through these notes with Brian and April. See what we can figure out,” she says in reference to the two interns I have working this case with her.

“I’ll drop you off. I need to go meet with the judge for the Baker case.”
