“Father might be keeping them with him,” Frederick says. “I’ll look more tonight once he’s asleep.”
Nodding even though panic is clawing at my chest, I say, “Let me know if you find anything.”
“I will.”
Raising my brows, I add, “Enjoy your pear picking.”
“I’ll find them,” he insists. “I swear.”
Before I go, I turn back. “You and Candace…” I hesitate, and then I lower my voice. “You’re not…”
“We’re not what?” Frederick’s face suddenly goes blank—too blank.
Eyeing him, I say, “Never mind.”
“I’ll find the contracts before Alaric releases Sabine.” He catches my arm before I step out the door. “You have to trust me.”
“You’ve never let me down.”
“And I never will,” he vows, saying it like a solemn promise. “I swear.”
