Everything I should stay away from.

I turned my attention back to Caffrey and smiled, taking in his handsome features and forgetting all about the tall, dark, and beautiful brothers. He was shorter than them to be sure, but he had dirty blond hair, the most gorgeous green eyes I’d seen in a while, and freckles peppering his face. He was definitely what I had in mind for a one-night stand.

We moved to a booth after a while to chat about our lives and how we got to where we were. It was easy to talk to him, easy to open up while still skirting the real issues of my life, and it was easy to lean into his touch. For the first time in years, I wasn’t pulling away. There were no alarm bells ringing in my head, no tiny devil telling me not to. It was time, and I was ready. He asked a question that I missed entirely in my silent pep-talk and then I blurted out an offer before I could back out. “Mmhm, we should have sex.”

His gaze darkened. “How drunk are you? It would be bad form of me to take you up on that if you’re drunk.”

“I’m not that drunk.” I stood up and balanced on one foot, then touched my nose. “See? Just don’t ask me to say the alphabet backwards. I can’t do that sober.”

“Can anyone?” He stood, taking me at my word. “My place or yours, then?”

“Well, I’m staying in a hotel, so ... mine? I tend to fall asleep pretty hard after a night of drinking and I don’t want you feeling stuck with me at yours. Plus, this way you can leave whenever you want.” I realized I was yammering on still, so I rocked up on my toes to kiss him and shut myself up.

“Bold of you to assume I’ll want to leave,” he teased quietly. “Come on. I’ll get us a cab.”
