Emilia

A few hours later, Emilia was reading in the family room when she heard the front door open, tiny footsteps clattering in the foyer like hail.

“Emilia,” Mimi sang out.

“This is Emilia’s day off,” Ra’as reminded his daughter. “She might be in her room or doing something by herself.”

“I just want her to see what we got for her dinner,” Mimi whispered loudly.

“Hi guys,” Emilia called out to them, placing down her reader and heading out to greet them.

“Emiiiiiiilia,” Mimi crowed, flinging herself around Emilia’s waist.

“Hi, Mimi,” Emilia said, patting the little head. “How was your day? How was Grandma?”

Mimi launched into an enthusiastic description of each minute detail of her day that Emilia had missed.

Emilia glanced up at Dyrk over Emilia’s head, hoping he’d had a good day too.

He gave her a quick grin and then disappeared to the kitchen with the big bags he was carrying.

“And then Daddy took us shopping,” Mimi was saying happily, still hugging Emilia.

She allowed herself to glance up at Ra’as.

He gave her a slow, sexy smile.

She could feel the blood rushing to her cheeks, and quickly shifted her attention back to Mimi.

“What did you shop for?” she asked. “Do you want to show me?”

“Dyrk has it,” Mimi said, pulling back and glancing around for her brother.

“He went into the kitchen with some bags,” Emilia said.

Mimi grabbed her hand and they raced into the kitchen, with Ra’as following behind, chuckling.

Dyrk was already laying out food on the counter when they arrived. There were fruits and vegetables, cuts of meat, a tray of eggs, and boxes and bottles of spices and oils, too.

“Wow,” Emilia said.

“We’re going to cook more interesting meals from now on,” Dyrk said.

His face was serious, but his eyes were alive with joy.

“Grandma gave us recipes from all the relatives so Cook can use them,” Mimi said. “But today we’re going to make dinner ourselves. Do you want to cook with us, Emilia?”

“It’s Emilia’s day off,” Ra’as reminded her.

“I would love to cook with you,” Emilia replied quickly. “Unless you’re having a family night.”

“We would be very happy for you to cook with us, Emilia,” Ra’as said.

They put away the groceries together, and then Ra’as swiped his bracelet to bring up the list of family recipes.

“Uncle Pryne’s stew,” Dyrk yelled out as Ra’as scrolled.

“Stew?” Mimi echoed uncertainly.
