sounded like “let’s go,” and jangled his car keys to reinforce
the bark of sound.
Haley couldn’t believe her luck. She ran upstairs to get her
sneakers and her purse, as well as her phone. That hadn’t been
taken away, and she fired off texts to her friends while she was
in her room. She came back down wearing a huge smile,
which was in direct contrast to Snake’s scowl.
He wore that scowl all the way to the mall, driving the black
sedan that Claire had produced out of nowhere for him to
chauffeur her around in.
“You’re coming with me?” she asked sweetly after Snake
parked in the underground mall parkade.
“Yes.”
“Okay, good. I’m going for tampons first. You, uh, don’t
have to come down the aisle with me or anything. Just wait by
the front door of the store.”
He actually seemed relieved by that, and for a second,
Haley felt bad about the deception. She’d been to the mall
countless times before and knew the store actually had three
doors. The main entrance and exit and another on the second
floor that opened up to the mall. She’d make her escape there.
As soon as she entered the store, she raced around to the
pharmacy side, and then, when she was sure Snake wasn’t able
to see her, she dashed straight down and past other aisles,
dodging people here and there, until she found the escalator
for the second floor. She went up, keeping a low profile,
glancing over her shoulder the whole time. When she was at
the exit and she spotted her friends waiting for her, she let out
a sigh of relief for the first time in a week.
