on her mouth and the expression on her face pinched, but her

eyes darkened.

“Silly me. You didn’t think at all because you aren’t capable

of rational thought. How are you even in college? Did your

dad bribe someone to get you in?”

That was so unfair. Haley bristled, gearing up for war. She’d

graduated near the top of her high school class, and she’d

worked her ass off to get there. This was her third year of

college, and she was still working her ass off.

“You’re not a nice woman.” Haley edged closer to the door

and Claire stepped up to block it. There was no other way out.

Something like hurt flashed in her eyes. “So I’ve been told.”

“You’re an asshole,” Haley clarified, stalling for time while

she looked for another escape route. She didn’t want to be this

woman’s prey. She didn’t want to be looked at like that. Like

she was going to be devoured. Did she?

Claire’s face twisted into a smirk. “Maybe.” Her face was

absolutely unreadable. Haley couldn’t tell what was going on

behind those dark eyes, and that was the worst part.

“Snake’s sick. I came in here because I needed to talk to

you.”

Those eyes flashed and Haley realized there were golden

brown flecks in the sea of black. How anyone could hav

e such

dark eyes, she had no idea. Claire flipped her blonde hair,

which looked like it had just come from a fresh blow out at the

salon, over her shoulder, and stared Haley down.

“Did you slip something in his drink when he wasn’t

looking?”

Haley was mortally offended by that suggestion. “No! Why
