The Bodyguard Affair
Sam gave her a curt nod. “I’ll step out and talk to your doctor. Perhaps you’d like to change into your clothes.”
She gestured to the hospital gown clinging to Bianca’s body. Bianca was suddenly aware of how thin it was. Her clothes were folded neatly on a nearby chair, her insulin pump sitting on top of them.
“Do you need a hand? Here.”
It took Bianca a moment to realize Sam’s outstretched hand was there so she could help Bianca out of bed. Heart suddenly racing, she pulled back the covers and rearranged her gown so she didn’t accidentally flash the woman who had gone above and beyond to help her. Because I haven’t embarrassed myself enough already.
As soon as Bianca was ready, she reached for Sam’s hand. While she had collapsed into Sam’s arms only hours ago, this was different.
This time, she would remember the exact moment she and Sam touched.
What surprised her more? That Sam’s hand was warm, or that it was soft? The one thing that didn’t surprise her was how strong the woman was as she pulled Bianca to her feet.
Nevertheless, she found herself off balance and falling toward Sam. She grabbed hold of Sam’s sturdy shoulders as she landed square against that rock-hard body. But the part of her that Bianca found her face against was the opposite of hard.
She pulled herself away from Sam’s chest, her face burning. Apparently, she hadn’t reclaimed all of her strength yet.
Sam grabbed Bianca’s waist, attempting to steady her. “Are you all right?”
Bianca nodded. It was all she could do with Sam’s hands clasped firmly around her waist, their bodies barely an inch from each other…
As if realizing this, Sam repositioned her hand to hold Bianca’s arm, easing her down to sit on the side of the bed before stepping back, her head turned away with the slightest flush on her cheeks.
Had she felt it too? That charge in the air? That spark of electricity arcing between them?
But any spark disappeared when Bianca realized that her gown was askew, showing far more of her than was decent.
Oh.That had to be why Sam reacted the way she did. Luckily for Bianca, the gown hadn’t come completely undone. But one shoulder was bared, and the hem had ridden up her thighs. Not to mention that her bare ass was peeking out the back.
Bianca straightened up her gown. “I’m fine,” she squeaked. “Thank you.”
Sam hurried out of the room, not once looking back at Bianca. As she removed the gown and carefully dressed, she imagined Sam barging back in, discovering her standing there in nothing but her underwear. Would that be so bad? There was a bed right there…
Bianca shook her head. Clearly, her hypo episode had knocked something loose from her skull. Sam was not her knight in shining armor. She wasn’t even her bodyguard.
And after the disaster of the past few hours, there would never be anything between them, professional or otherwise.
