Down on Luck - Page 29

‘What ya thinking about?” Darcy asked.

“Nothing,” I lied.

“Have you called him?”

“Called whom?” I asked.

“Gavin, silly pants.”

“Oh, no.”

“Good, if you haven caved and called him for a month it means you’ll get over him quicker.”

I wondered how slow quick was because it had been a month and I still wasn’t over him. I was writing a lot more when I was with him. Even over the week between our first meeting and the engagement party. After we broke up the creative spark, which seemed to be linked directly to my happiness was gone again. Despite still going to see Dr. Benoit.

“It’ll pass, you’ll see,” Darcy said..

I wanted to confess that I had actually tried calling him but his phone was disconnected. It was probably too late to try and call him a month later. Particularly with how cold I had been. He probably figured I was over him. A fair enough conclusion under the circumstances. I still couldn’t believe what he had done to Kenny. While it was kind of gross it still felt pretty good to see him get what he deserved.

“Hey you two!”

We both turned and saw Amy from the office, clad on bright green bell bottoms and a matching halter top coming towards us.

“Hey, Amy,” Darcy greeted.

“Hey,” was all I could muster.

“Want to go for a walk? Get out of this crowd?” Darcy asked, meaning the question for me.

“Sure!” Amy said, enthusiastic as ever.

After a few blocks of walking, the noise of the parade fading into the distance I realized we were near the production studio where Gavin had his audition the day it all when down.

“We’re going to duck into this fabrics store,” Darcy said, patting me on the shoulder.

This didn’t come as a great surprise. Both she and Amy loved sewing. Costumes mostly and ComicCon was only four months away.

“No problem, I’ll wait for you out here.”

Know them they could be a couple of hours as they pick out just the right elements. There was no real harm in me just strolling over to the production studio to see what I could see. The building was even bigger than I expected. There was a security guard at the front but didn’t didn’t seem to be paying much attention. I brilliantly utilized the age old practice of walking with confidence and looking like I belonged to get past the security desk without the guard even looking up. I had heard before it worked but didn’t expect it to work out quite that well. Especially not on the first try. Though it likely helped that I was dressed somewhat normally and didn’t have green shamrocks stuck to my cheeks like some revellers. That would have likely raised some questions.

Getting the office numbers for the producers from a list near the elevators I went up there hoping for the best or at least to get some answers. My breath caught a bit as I stepped off the elevator. I was really doing it. I was actually going to infiltrate a production office to try and get some information. I would have felt like a spy. Were I not so scared.

I wasn’t sure exactly what they could do to me except maybe ask me to leave but I was sure there was some kind of trespassing or whatever I could be charged with. If the building owners saw fit.

“Can I help you?” asked a gorgeous young assistant I barely noticed sitting at her desk.

“I-I’m looking for someone. I’m not sure if they’re here but-”

“Okay, what’s their name?”

“Gavin McSteele,” I said.

“Oh, yes, I remember him. He was in here for an audition about a month ago. Really tall, sexy accent, amazing eyes.’

“That’s him,” I said, doing my best not to shudder at the memory.

“Ms. Applegate would no better than me,” the assistant said.

“Ms. Applegate?” I asked dumbly.

“The producer that he had the audition with,” the assistant clarified without even rolling her eyes.

I realized that with the job she had it was likely she was quite used to dealing with people how had more beauty with brains and was more than accustomed to stupid or obvious questions.

“Oh, right, of course,” I said, still trying to save face.

“I’ll call her for you.”

“Oh, I-”

“Hello, Ms. Applegate? This is Sara at the desk. Yes. I have someone here who is looking for Gavin McSteele. Right. Okay. She’ll be right out.”

I was speechless. I really hadn’t been expecting that. I hadn’t planned on disturbing anyone. Just sort of asking around to see if anyone knew anything.

“You’re looking for Gavin McSteele?” Ms. Applegate asked appearing in the reception area.

“Y-yes,” I said, confidence gone.

“You’d better come into my office.”

“O-okay.”

“Are you his girlfriend?” she asked, closing the door.

“Kind of,” I admitted.

“Well, in any case, he came in about a month ago for another audition. I’m the one who cast him in his current series and I really think that he’s got something special. And I don’t just mean his jawline. He did okay with the audition but seemed to be having some trouble connecting to the character who is struggling with addiction. I knew he was capable of way better so it must be some kind of mental block. I suggested that he get his head together and come back in. I had to cast somebody else because he didn’t come back in time. I’m honestly getting a bit worried.”
