Truly Mine - (Mason & Sophie 1, Roommate Duet 3)
I shoot him a glare. “Oh sure, if he doesn’t have a warrant out for his arrest, you don’t care.”
“That’s not true,” he says, pointing at me with his unopened beer. “I’d care if he were a sniper.”
“You’re useless,” I mutter, yanking the beer from his hand and walking back to the living room.
A few minutes later, Sophie joins us, her frown still etched on her beautiful face. “You bombarded him with questions about his late wife and personal life. I told you he was still grieving, and you just had to bring it up!”
“I was making conversation!” I stand, setting my beer on the table and walking toward her. “You told me to make him feel welcome. Were we just supposed to ignore the elephant in the room and talk about the weather?” I wave my arm out, frustrated as fuck that she’s upset with me over this Caleb douche. “Or maybe why he’s living in his car? Why he’s touching your knee and leaning into you? Should I have talked about that?”
Sophie blinks, takes a step back, then pins me with a glare. “What are you talking about? He wasn’t doing those things. Wait. Were you snooping in his car? What the hell is wrong with you?”
Liam chuckles before sneaking around her and going upstairs, leaving me alone with a pissed-off Sophie. Asshole.
“Fine, you want to do this now?” I take another step toward her. “He’s into you, Sophie. He painted this sob story about his late wife, but I’d bet money he’s a fuckin’ liar. You don’t check out another woman’s ass, find ways to touch them, or get that close to a person you just met a few weeks ago. If his wife died only three months ago, he’d still be struggling to get out of bed, he’d be drinking himself stupid, he’d be grieving the love of his life! You can try to say he’s hiding his pain, but trust me when I tell you the only thing he’s hiding is the truth.”
My voice is loud and deep, no longer able to contain my anger from this whole situation. Sophie looks at me like I’ve lost my damn mind, and maybe I have, but she means more to me than I’ve ever admitted.
“Mason…” Sophie croaks. “I think you’re misreading him because I don’t see any of that. He started at the grieving circle the same day I did because he needed to talk about his feelings and be around people who understood what he’s going through.”
“How can you not see through his bullshit, Soph? Especially you.”
“What’s that mean?” She furrows her brows, crossing her arms over her chest.
“You saw firsthand what losing Brandon did to your sister. What it did to Hunter. If they didn’t have each other, they would’ve been even worse. Lennon fought for months about her feelings because she was still in love with Brandon. She tried pushing Hunter away to avoid the guilt of moving on. I wasn’t even around them that much while they were going through all that shit, yet I could see their pain and struggles.”
“Their story is different…”
I arch a brow, daring her to challenge me on that.
“And what would Caleb’s motive be then?” she pushes.
“He probably goes from grieving circle to grieving circle to find women like you who just lost someone and are vulnerable. How can’t you see the way he was looking at you?”
“And why does it matter to you so much how he was looking at me? You’ve made it crystal clear that we’re only friends, so let’s say he is lying and just wants to get me into bed. Would that be a problem?”
I growl. My eyes narrow into slits as I close the gap between us. Sophie steps back until her back touches the wall and we’re chest to chest. “You’re much more than a side piece, Sophie. More than just a quickie in a bar bathroom. So fucking more than some asshole’s game.”
Sophie inhales sharply, keeping her gaze on me as the tension heightens between us. “You’re overthinking this. Everyone grieves differently. It doesn’t mean he should just stop living his life.”
Taking a step back, I suck in a deep breath, and brush both hands through my hair. I clench my jaw, my blood boiling with frustration and anger, and the need to prove my point to her becomes overwhelming.
Can’t she see I’m trying to protect her? After Weston, her guard should be up. She shouldn’t be letting anyone near her, especially not some guy she just met weeks ago. But Sophie is too goddamn sweet for her own good. She wants to see the positive in every situation and person, and misses what’s right in front of her. I’d be pissed at her about it if it wasn’t one of her best qualities and why I was drawn to her in the first place.
