“Mm,” I grumble, trying to roll over, but they don’t allow me to. More squealing bounces around me as both girls climb over me, trying to get my attention.

“Come on, girls,” Elisabet says from somewhere in the room because I’m still keeping my eyes closed. “Let your dad get up,” she tells them, and with long, drawn-out awws, they’re off the bed and standing quietly beside it as they watch me. I can feel their eyes on me.

When I finally open my eyes, I take them in. Dressed in their white summer dresses with unicorn print, they look exactly alike, only one has a beauty spot on her nose.

Camilla and Thalia are the two most beautiful girls I know, besides their mother, of course. They inherited her big green eyes and my raven-black hair.

“What did you practice for Dad?” Elisabet asks, and both girls start singing “Happy Birthday” in their soft, melodic little voices, which warms my heart. They’re growing far too quickly for my liking, but when I told Elisabet I’m thinking of buying a gun, she shot me down, so to speak.

As soon as they’re finished, I open my arms. “Come on. You are both the best singers I’ve ever heard,” I tell them as they shuffle into my waiting hug. Elisabet smiles down at me, her eyes shimmering with tears.

“You look happy,” I tell her.

“I am.” Her nod is quick, and the smile on her face brightens her expression. I can’t believe this woman has given me everything I never knew I wanted. Especially a family. It wasn’t in the cards for me. My focus was never on finding love, and then Elisabet walked into my office, and I was struck by her.

“What’s on the menu, girls?” I ask our daughters.

“Waffles,” Camilla giggles playfully as she tugs my nose. I’ve taught them the trick to stealing your nose, and even though she’s not getting it completely right, I play along.

“And did you make my coffee?” I pinch Thalia’s nose, causing her to fall over in a fit of giggles.

“Yes, Daddy. Momma did.” Camilla is the one who answers me because her sister is still laughing uncontrollably.

“Good girls.” I pull them close, hugging them to my chest before we all make our way to the kitchen where there’s a spread waiting for me. Besides the waffles, there’s fresh fruit, toast, even eggs and bacon. “This is a lot of food, sweetheart,” I tell Elisabet, pressing a kiss to her lips, which earns me a squeal from both our girls.

“It is, but it’s your birthday,” my wife tells me. “And we baked you some special cookies.” I watch her head to the oven to pull out a tray of double chocolate cookies with sprinkles on top. I’m guessing the colorful topping was the girls’ idea.

“Now that’s what I’d like for breakfast,” I tell them, but offer Elisabet a wink so she knows exactly what I’d like to be devouring this morning.

We settle in for our breakfast, Elisabet opposite me with Camilla beside her, and Thalia beside me. And as we dig into our waffles, I look around at my girls and realize I’m the happiest and luckiest fucking man in the world.
