Matt stood next to Dylan, across the street from Mitrofanov’s house. Sean had already headed back to get Jena and tell her the news about Niklaus’s disappearing act.

“Somehow, the man was tipped off that they we were coming,” Dylan said.

“By whom? Shannon Day? Ethel? Neither seems likely to me, and everyone else that knew about the laptop and warrant is here.”

“Not Jena,” he said flatly. “She’s not in on it, Dylan. I know her. She’s innocent.”

Dylan nodded. “That’s good enough for me.”

The block was mostly empty. Being the middle of the day, most Destonians were at work. Jason and Nicole had already led those who were at home on this street to a safe distance.

He looked at his watch. “Two minutes have passed since we exited the house.”

Dylan nodded. “That leaves three until the bomb detonates. Black needs to be getting out soon.”

“We both know

him. He’ll get it done. He’s the best.”

“Yes, he is.”

Dylan clearly admired Black as much as he and Sean did. Black wasn’t just their boss. He was also a mentor and a friend.

He felt his cell buzz, indicating he’d gotten a text message.

Was it from Black?

“I got one, too,” Dylan said, taking out his phone.

Matt pulled out his cell and what he saw made his heart freeze.

Out of the corner of his eye he saw Jason and Nicole running his direction and waving their arms. Each held their cells in their hands.

They’d gotten the same message:

This is Kip Lunceford, Destonians.

Time is a funny thing.

How often do you think you have more time than you have?

What time is it?

It’s time to learn a lesson in humility.

Boom!

He and Dylan started to run into Mitrofanov’s house. He opened his mouth to yell to Black to get out, but he was too late.

The bomb exploded, its deafening sound spreading faster than the debris.

He and Dylan rolled to the ground behind a car parked in the street.

His mind went back to the day, years ago, when he and Sean had emerged from the tunnel away from the burning compound of the cult. Sean’s and his parents had died that day. My little sister, too.

Peeking over the car, he saw the flames licking the shell of the house that Black had been inside.

He knew his boss—his friend—had just been murdered by a madman.
