Jena shivered violently, realizing the gravity of what had just happened.

The two thugs remained on the floor. Keeping her gun ready, she leaned forward, listening for any sound from the duo. Nothing. Not even a gasp or moan. They were dead.

“We did it, Ethel.” She’d gotten her miracle, thank God.

“Jena, check on Shannon,” the woman said from behind the couch.

“On it.” She ran out the door.

Jena knelt down by Shannon, who was on the floor. A large dark stain on her blouse revealed she’d been shot, her pink wig askew and her eyes glassy.

Jena put her finger to Shannon’s neck. No pulse. She saw another wound, this one in her temple, half-hidden by her wig, and she knew Shannon was gone.

Tears filled her eyes, staring down at the brave woman’s body.

She ran back into Jason’s office, stepping over the two dead Russians. “Where are you?”

“Over here,” Ethel choked out.

The sound of the dear lady’s voice told Jena something was dreadfully wrong. When she got to Ethel, she saw the woman had been shot.

Chapter Twenty-One

Jena looked at Ethel’s leg, which was bleeding. Standing up, she grabbed the scissors from Jason’s desk.

“What are you doing?” Ethel asked, her face pale and her lips quivering.

“Making a tourniquet.” She pulled off her top and cut it into strips.

Sean ran into the room, and she felt the weight on her shoulders lighten some. He’s safe.

“Matt?”

“He’s fine.” He took the strips and bent down over Ethel. “I’ve got this, baby. Call Doc Ryder.”

She nodded, jumping to the phone.

In a flash, he had Ethel’s wound taken care of. “Field dressing is something I’m familiar with.”

“Apparently so,” the woman said, her words coming out slurred.

“Ethel, you’ve lost some blood but not too much. You’re going to be fine.”

“I know.” She laughed weakly. “This old woman is too tough to go out by two chicken-shit mobsters.”

“Doctor Ryder’s office,” said a voice over the phone. “This is Nurse Cottrell. How may I help you?”

She recognized the woman’s voice. “Paris, this is Jena Taylor. We need Doc at the sheriff’s office now. There’s been a shooting.”

The next day, Jena stood between Matt and Sean, waiting for their turn to see Ethel. Gretchen was in front of them, the next to be allowed in. The line outside Ethel’s room was extremely long. No surprise. All of Destiny had shown up to see their favorite judge.

Doc Ryder and Paris stood at the door, monitoring to make sure everyone abided by the rules of no more than three visitors at a time.

The Knights came out together.
