“How long is your shift?” The expression on her face does me a lot of good. She can’t wait for me to return.
I cup her cheek and press my lips to her forehead. “I had to pull a double today, and I’ve got another four hours left.”
“Okay.”
“Took you long enough. I’m hungry,” Georgie complains, looking at her phone instead of Sean who hasn’t taken his eyes off her. Seconds ago, she was saying how she wanted a guy like Rocky, and now that she’s got someone handsome falling at her feet, she’s turned to ice.
“I’ve got to go, Lydia. Be a good girl,” I warn her, tapping her nose. I want to kiss the fuck out of her, but if I do, I won’t leave.
“Yes, Sheriff.”
Chapter Three
Lydia
The second Whit leaves, my heart hurts. How is that even humanly possible? We’ve only just met, and he commands me so effortlessly. The way his blue eyes peer into mine, I feel a longing so profound it’s unexplainable—lust mixed with something more. I sit here and ponder it a bit in silence when it finally hits me. Security. That’s what he brings to me. A sense of security.
“Lydia. You’ve been too quiet. Is this about the sheriff?”
“It’s that obvious?” I ask, looking at my older sister.
“Yes.” Georgie pulls me in for a hug, reading the sadness on my face that I can’t seem to hide. I can almost feel the tears bubbling at the surface for no good reason.
“You’re always the levelheaded one. Look, I’m trying to lose my virginity to the sheriff while you ignore the hottie. Bennett’s handsome agent was practically humping your leg, and you kicked him away like the smart one.” I should have remained in control today like I am with every other man that crosses my path, but something about him changed me.
Georgie releases a long sigh. “Is that levelheadedness, or a stubborn attitude?” Uh oh. I sense some regret, but maybe it’s for the best.
I throw my arms around my sweet bigger sister. “It depends. Was he really turning you off or turning you on?”
She huffs, pulling away from me to stand up and pace. “On, regrettably, but I can’t just fall into a man’s arms because he’s hot. I need more. Especially since he couldn’t stop with his stupid pickup lines. Seriously, he’s acting like he’s in love with me, probably to just get into my pants.”
“I thought he seemed pretty nice at dinner.” I was off in a daze mostly, but I did catch a bit of their conversation.
“Yes, but we don’t know each other and he’s acting like he wants to marry me and have a gaggle of babies,” she adds, throwing her head back onto the sofa with a huff.
I lean back and press my head to her shoulder. “Well, you can’t know unless you actually try to get to know him. Besides, all our men must be hit with the same love potion or something. Darcy would probably be knocked up if she wasn’t on birth control. The caveman spell has taken over this town.”
“See…stubbornness. I love that you and Darcy have literally been swept up by strong, handsome men, but I refuse to believe in love at first sight,” she continues, nudging me off her as she rises to her feet and starts pacing.
I wave her off because she’s overthinking this. “Then don’t. Go with lust. It sounds good to me. And if he’s anything like the sheriff, kissing him will be so worth it.”
“So you’re not planning out how many babies to give the sheriff?” she asks.
“Nope. I want to feel his nightstick, though.” I’m totally lying. The thought had crossed my mind throughout our brief encounter, but it can wait. We’re all on birth control, which is one of the smartest things girls our age can do.
“Dirty girl.” She winks at me, but I know damn well she was thinking the same thing about Bennett’s agent, or maybe she’s thinking about more than sex…babies?
“Wait…are you thinking about babies and a happily ever after with Sean?”
“It passed through my head the second his eyes landed on mine.” Wow, so she doesn’t feel so levelheaded after all.
“Damn. Are you afraid that he’ll hurt you?” I reach out to grab her hand.
She freezes, shakes her head, and then slaps her hands on her hips. “This isn’t about me. It’s about you. What are you going to do with the sheriff?”
I giggle and grin like a fool because that’s what happens when I think about him. “Well, hopefully I’ll have a dozen orgasms at least before I go back home.”
“I’m leaving in two days,” she informs me, which of course kind of puts a kink in my plans. Actually I didn’t have any plans at all considering this was all up in the air, but now that I’ve met Whit, I’m not sure I’ll ever be ready to leave.
