He shrugs his shoulders slightly. “Reed is my best friend. When everything first happened, he came storming into my place and everything sort of came out in the open.”
I open my mouth wide. “That bastard!” I yell. Then I turn my anger toward Jason. “Oh my God! You must think I’m so pathetic!”
He extends his arm and touches my upper arm. “No, sorry. That’s not at all what I was thinking. I didn’t mean to invade your privacy. I just felt funny not telling you since I do know.”
I close my eyes and blow out a breath. “You’re right. I’m sorry. This isn’t your fault.”
As if on cue, Reed comes busting through the door. “What the fuck is taking so long?”
I narrow my eyes at him, and then I turn and smile at Jason. “Could you give us a second?”
He nods and grabs one of the cases of beer and walks past Reed. The moment the door is closed, I march right up to him and shove at his chest. “You fucking asshole!”
I step back and he looks at me confused, so I continue. “Why the fuck would you tell all your buddies my personal business?” I shout.
He crosses his arms over his chest. “Only Jason knows.”
I roll my eyes. “Missing the point much?”
He shrugs. “Well, if you weren’t out here all alone with him, then you never would have found out.”
I place my hand on my hip. “I’m sorry. That apology sounded awfully like I’m a dick.”
He steps closer to me. “I wasn’t apologizing.” He takes another step, forcing me to step back. “Jake was a dick. If you didn’t want that to reflect poorly on you, then maybe you shouldn’t have married him.”
“Fuck you, Reed! I guess being a dick runs in the family.” I shove past him back into the house.
I grab another beer from the freshly restocked ice bucket and plop back down next to Jason. He gives me a half smile. “Is everything okay?”
I cozy up closer to him. “Yeah, everything is good now. Oh, and you were wrong about him being the protective older brother. He doesn’t care at all.”
He smiles at me like he knows I’m full of shit, but it doesn’t stop him from cozying right back up with me. Reed continues to give me death glares the whole night, but whatever. Screw him. Just because he’s helping me out doesn’t mean I have to do what he says. I am not going from one controlling brother to the next. He should know that better than anyone.
People start to leave after the game is done until it is just Jason and myself in the kitchen cleaning up. Reed walks up to the counter and interrupts our conversation. “It’s late. You should head out,” he says sternly to Jason.
Jason seems to know better than to start something between him and his friend, so he agrees. “It was nice meeting you,” he says to me as he heads out, and I’m pretty sure that’s probably the last time he’ll ever try flirting with me.
Reed brings some bottles from the living room into the kitchen. “Thanks for the food. I’ll clean up.”
I shrug as I continue to load the dishwasher. “I don’t mind.”
We continue to clean up the kitchen in complete silence. Once I throw the last dish in the dishwasher, I turn and look at Reed. “I’m going to bed now,” I say as I start walking toward my room.
“Wren!” Reed calls out.
I turn back around. “Hm?”
He gives a half smile. “Sorry about Jason finding out. He won’t tell anyone. You can trust him. He’s a good guy.”
I smile softly back. “Too bad you made sure he wasn’t available as an option then, huh?”
He leans up against the counter. “Don’t you think you are trying to move on a little fast?”
I cross my arms across my chest. “When’s the last time you had sex?” I ask.
He tenses his jaw. “How is that relevant?”
I place a hand on my hip. “Let me rephrase. How long since you’ve orgasmed during sex?”
His jaw ticks to the side, but he doesn’t answer. I give a fake smile. “Right. So how about you don’t tell me how fast I am moving on from my lying, cheating husband. Okay?” I turn back around and head into my room and shut the door behind me.
