My mom has told some of her close friends about us, but since not everyone knows, I try not to be too touchy when she is working an event. It’s so fucking hard though. It’s like now that I can finally touch her, I can’t keep my hands off of her.
She doesn’t seem to mind. That’s another side of Wren I wasn’t expecting. Maybe because Jake was never really affectionate with her in public, but I never thought Wren would be so...uhm...so fucking horny.
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised considering how all of this started in the first place. Who knew I’d be the one who was fighting her off when I’m the one who’s been in love with her since the first moment she walked into my parents kitchen wearing that crop top. I knew immediately my mom was going to comment about it and was already ready to defend that girl every chance I got.
The part I wasn’t expecting though was the way her grateful smile made my heart stop. She fucking took my breath right out of my chest. I hung out with Jake more that summer than I had probably my whole life, and it wasn’t because I suddenly wanted to be his friend.
I’m still kicking myself for taking so long to say something to her. By the time I realized what the feelings I had for her meant, it was too late. She was already seriously dating Jake at that point, and it wasn’t long after that they were engaged, so I did the only thing I knew how. I tried to protect her from all the bullshit I knew came with my family. I would have left this town years ago if it weren’t for her. I knew I had to be there for her in case she needed me.
I know I didn’t always express that in the right way, but it was fucking hard to know what the right thing to do was when the girl I was in love with was married to my brother. Sometimes I’d say fuck it and do whatever I could for her and other times I’d overcompensate the other way in order to try to move on from her. All I know now is that now that I have her, I’m never letting her go.
I stop her before she opens the door. “Do you want to get married again?”
She whips back around with wide eyes. “Reed! Riley is literally walking to the door. Not exactly the right time for this conversation.”
I smile at her. “Don’t think about it. Just answer.”
She shakes her head at me and tries to hide a smile. “Yes.” She doesn’t even hesitate before turning back around and opening the door, leaving me with the stupidest fucking grin on my face.
Riley walks into the house and looks from me to Wren and then back to me again. “Uh... everything okay here?”
Wren leads her into the kitchen. “Yes. Reed was just about to get out of our way.” She gives me a pointed look, but I don’t move from the spot I’m standing.
I’m too happy to think straight. “In a minute.”
“Reed,” she groans. “We don’t have time for this.”
I lean forward on the counter. “Marry me.”
Wren and Riley both open their eyes wide. Riley clears her throat. “Uh...do you want me to leave?”
I say yes at the same time Wren says no. She turns back to me. “Reed, really? You’re doing this now?”
I can tell she’s not really upset, so I continue. “I’ll do it again. I promise. For real, with a fucking ring and everything, but I don’t want to go another second without calling you my future wife.”
“Reed, this is crazy! We’ve only been dating a couple months, and I don’t even know if that’s what you want to call what we’re doing.” She looks conflicted like she doesn’t believe the words coming out of her mouth.
I smirk back. “Marry me, Wren.”
“Say yes,” Riley whispers.
Wren whips to her. “Come back in five minutes.”
I stop her before she even takes a step. “No! Stay right there!”
I step toward Wren and grab her hands. “I don’t care if it’s been months or minutes. I’ve known since the moment I first met you that you were it for me. There’s no one else. God, I tried finding someone else. I desperately tried. I don’t want to wait. I don’t need to think about it. I don’t need some random standard set of time to date before I ask. I want you as my wife, and I’m desperately hoping you feel the same way.”
I cup her face and wipe away the stray tear that was running down her face. “Marry me, Wren. Please, please fucking marry me.” I lean my forehead up against hers.
Suddenly there’s a gasp followed by sniffles to the left of me. I glance at Riley, and she throws up her hands. “I have no idea why I’m crying. I barely know you people.”
I laugh. “You can leave now.”
She gladly walks toward the front door. “You have five minutes, Wren! You better be an engaged woman by the time I get back!”
I turn back to Wren when the front door swings shut. She laughs through her tears. “Yes.”
“What?” I ask even though I heard her.
“Yes! I’ll fucking marry you!” She wraps her arms around my neck and slams her mouth to mine, catching me slightly off guard.
Once it finally clicks though, I lift her and squeeze her body up against mine. I don’t know that I’ve ever been happier in my entire life. I pull away slightly and set her back down. “Really?” I ask.
“Yes!” she laughs.
“Fuck!” I shout. “Fuck, you said yes!”
She laughs harder and shoves at my chest. “Go bring my intern back! We only have a couple hours to get this all ready!”
“Are you kidding me?” I ask as I grab her and press my lips back to hers again. “I can’t not fuck you right now.”
She shoves me back and laughs harder. “You should have thought of that before you asked!”
I groan and pull her back up against me. “Why do you love torturing me so much?”
