But she could barely think on the profoundness of the that realization as Phi drove her mad with desire. Her lower stomach tightened and clenched, another release coming quickly.
“That’s it,” Arden purred. “Come for us.”
As if the words were magic, Danica exploded, dragging Phi along with her until they were a mess of shaking nerves and trembling limbs. They laid there, naked and panting for what felt like an hour but could have only been minutes, when Phi’s tablet went off. He carefully unwrapped his arm from Danica with a grimace of regret and picked it up. Their time for leisure had run out, it seemed.
“It’s the course map,” he offered as explanation while he studied it. His eyes widened a moment later. “There’s a whole slew of traps I’ve never seen before on here and that’s just the ones they’ve dared tell us about. Most of them are only marked without saying what they do.”
“Did you expect anything different?” Arden asked with a sigh. “If there’s that many on the sixty-mile course that they’ve marked, can you imagine how many aren’t marked at all?”
Danica leaned over and looked at the high-tech map Phi was studying. It was large—sixty miles was a lot—but that wasn’t what surprised her. The map was highly detailed and when she tapped on the screen, it zoomed in, showing even more detail.
“As we go through the race, it’ll track our position as well,” Phi explained. “Like a GPS of sorts that doesn’t tell us where to go. We’ll make our own choices.”
“We should get dressed,” Arden said, standing from the bed. “We only have an hour before we’re expected at the starting line.” His eyes met Phi’s. “Come on, Navigator. It’s time to go win you a crown.”
Danica stood up and stretched, drawing both of their eyes. When she grinned at them, they both straightened and smiled back.
“Let’s go kick some ass.”
But Phi took just a minute longer to heal the puncture marks on her shoulder and neck. By the time he finished, Danica didn’t even feel her legs shake anymore.
Even the vampires had their own sort of magic.
She couldn’t help wondering what business a human woman had in their world, if she had any business being there at all.
Danica had no answers long after she donned her new coveralls and prepared for the fight of her life.
