“Wow, Emilia,” Mimi said softly. “The Lizard is his favorite.”
“Oh no,” Emilia said to herself.
What if they got into an accident, or the children spilled their lunches in there?
“Let me just call your father quickly,” she murmured.
Dyrk was already climbing into the side hatch, running his hand down the polished curve of the door in awe.
Emilia’s fingers danced on her bracelet.
“Ra’as Drayven,” her employer barked.
“Um, it’s Emilia,” she said.
“Emilia,” he breathed.
A second later his video feed was on, and he was gazing at her intently.
“Is everything okay?” he asked.
“Y-yes,” she said. “But did you mean to give me the green car?”
“The green car?” he echoed.
“The, um, the Lizard?” she said.
“Of course,” he told her. “You said you wanted Dyrk not to be embarrassed when you dropped him off at school. I thought that particular gadabout might make an impression.”
“It definitely will,” she replied dubiously.
“Good,” he said crisply. “Is there anything else I can help you with Emilia?”
His mouth seemed to caress her name in a way that made her melt a little inside.
“N-no thank you, Mr. Drayven,” she replied.
“Excellent,” he said. “Take good care of it. That one’s my favorite.”
Sun gods, no…
“We can take a different one,” she said quickly.
But he had already ended the comm.
She took a deep breath and let it out slowly.
This is no different from riding in the purple monster, she told herself inwardly. You didn’t wreck that gadabout. You won’t wreck this one.
If anything, this one was bound to have more updated auto-controls. It was probably impossible to crash.
Probably.
Hopefully.
“Come on, Emilia,” Mimi sang out. “This one is fun to ride in because it’s fast.”
“It is?” she asked, looking back and forth between the kids.
