Dyrk was hanging out the window looking like he’d won the sector lotto.
“Yeah,” he said. “Really fast.”
“Well, I guess we’ll find out what she’s got,” Emilia said, shrugging as casually as she could.
The kids erupted in cheers, and she found herself feeling a burst of confidence.
Once they were all safely seated, she programmed in the coordinates of the school, then she slid the ride-tone into high.
Mimi smiled and Dyrk threw his head back to laugh.
In less than a breath, they were flying out of the garage and down the driveway like a spacecraft trying to escape into orbit. After a few seconds, the alternate engines kicked in and the little gadabout thrust seamlessly into the air.
Though they were moving unthinkably fast, the Lizard was silent, unlike the purple monster, which had rattled and whined, even at low speed.
Soon the trees were flying past until they blurred.
She had been worried her hesitation about taking the correct vehicle might make them late. But they were bound to make up any time they’d lost, and then some.
Mimi slipped her little hand into Emilia’s.
“Is this too fast, Mimi?” Emilia whispered to her.
“No,” Mimi whispered back with wide eyes. “It’s awesome.”
Emilia squeezed her hand, and they all watched the scenery whiz by. Everything looked different today because of their wild pace.
Too soon, they were pulling up in front of the school.
Emilia let go of Mimi’s hand to slide the programming into manual. She revved the main engine one last time and then locked on the brakes.
The gadabout touched down, and then slid sideways up to the school like a racer in the holo-films.
“Wow,” Dyrk murmured. “I didn’t know you could drive like that.”
“Act like it’s no big deal,” she told him quickly.
The hatch opened with a hiss, and Dyrk stepped out with his usual too-cool expression back in place.
“Whoa,” one of the kids yelled.
Two more boys gathered by the curb to check out Dyrk’s ride, as he headed into school with a bit of swagger in his step.
“See you later,” Emilia called to him.
He turned back to her and gave her a cocky half-smile that made her heart burst with pride.
She revved the engine and slid out onto the road again before she could do anything to mess up his epic entrance.
