He was on his feet in an instant, wrapping his arms around her and spinning her around as the girls cheered.
“Oh wait,” she said. “Put me down a sec, I forgot I have a condition.”
“You do?” he asked.
She went up on her toes and whispered it in his ear.
“Your wish is my command,” he told her, smiling.
“Really?” she asked.
“Really,” he said. “Now who wants to go to the animal shelter?”
Bo shrieked with glee.
“That was your condition?” Minerva asked, smiling.
“You guys have always had my back,” April shrugged. “Besides, I love pets, and this house is too big for the four of us.”
“Yes,” Minerva yelled.
Khall leaned down to press his lips to April’s forehead.
She closed her eyes, soaking in the sensation of being loved and cared for. If this was a preview of their lives together, she wasn’t sure how she could bear the happiness.
“Good news,” Prauxx called out, jogging over on her precarious shoes.
“We got the house?” Minerva asked in wonder.
“You got the house,” Prauxx confirmed, her eyes shining with pride. “And the seller agreed to sell with all the contents. Title is already run, and your credits are confirmed. You can move in as soon as I have your thumbprint.”
“Our thumbprints,” Khall said with a smile.
“Sweet gods, look at that ring,” Prauxx breathed. “Wait. Did you two get engaged while I was on the call?”
April smiled proudly and nodded, as Khall wrapped his arm around her shoulders and pulled her close.
“Story of my life,” Prauxx teased, typing into her bracelet and shaking her head. “I miss everything while I’m on my comms. Here you go, space for two thumbprints.”
“Ready?” Khall asked April, fixing her with his amber gaze.
She took one last look around at the suns setting over the farmhouse and the girls heading off to explore the meadow again, hand in hand.
“I’ll always be ready for an adventure with you,” she told him.
They placed their thumbs against the hologram at once and a moment later, both of their bracelets buzzed.
“Congratulations,” Prauxx said quietly. “I’ll leave your family to enjoy your new home. All gates and locks have been reprogrammed to your IDs. Call if you need anything at all.”
“Thank you for your hard work,” Khall told her, offering her his arm.
They clasped and shook twice.
“Bye, girls,” Prauxx called out before tottering back through the house to get to her hover car out front.
And just like that, their new life had begun.
“How do you feel?” Khall asked, grabbing her hands. “I know this is a lot, really fast. We can have a long engagement if you want.”
