Gage (Men of Honor 1) - Page 56

He climbed onto the bed next to me and took me in his arms right where I wanted to be. “I think you’d be great with a little girl.” He reared back and looked down at me as if surprised that I was talking about giving him another child so soon after my ordeal.

“We’ll see!” He kissed my forehead and pulled my head down to his chest as I stared over at my babies until my eyes grew tired and I dropped off into sleep.

“Let me outta here.” I knocked my shoulder into the door of the all white padded room where I’d awakened just minutes ago. How did I get here? The last thing I remember is being in the cell at the women’s prison where I was doing twenty-five to life. It was still taking some time getting use to the way my life had changed and the swiftness with which it had.

I forgot that Gage Sievers had very deep pockets and friends in very high places, at least in our town. It hadn’t taken me long to figure out that he was behind my downfall, not that he even tried to hide it.

There’d been no one to stand with me and in the end I’d had to use a state appointed attorney since my dead husband’s kids had seized all assets pending the end of an internal investigation into their father’s will. The man I’d fucked to have things go my way had folded under pressure and was now doing time himself for his part and forging the will.

“Hello!” I screamed into the void, more afraid in this room than the four by four cell I was accustomed to. I knew what it was because of the straight jacket I was wearing and it struck fear in my heart.

But why was I here? I thought back since I wasn’t crazy and could still hold a thought though I may wish not to. Oh yes, I’d been in the cell when the library cart came by. I’d tried refusing the book but the other inmate had insisted, going so far as to toss the book through the bars.

That’s when the piece of paper had flown out and landed on the floor. I got up off the insect infested mattress to see what it was and read the few lines before everything went black.

There was no signature but I knew who it was from; Gage. Just a little announcement that he and his wife were now the proud parents of twin sons. The screams started again and the last thing I heard were rushing feet as the nurses rushed the door.

The End
