"He's Logan."
"Do I need to kill him?"
"Only if you're jealous he's a bigger star."
Mal smiles. "No, only if you like him more."
"Impossible."
He takes my hand and nods to the road where all the cars are parked. "Then let's go."
"Business first."
He feigns offense, but only for a second. Then he's back to that wide smile.
I check that everything is ready, I put in my goodbyes, and I follow Mal to his car.
It's torture keeping my hands off Mal as we drive down Pacific Coast Highway. Though off is a relative term.
I squeeze his hand.
I hug his arm.
I drag my fingertips over his wrist and forearm.
Every time we stop at a light, I pull him into a soft, slow kiss. His lips make me warm in a way nothing else does.
They make me feel whole in a way nothing else does.
I've lost sense of time since I quit working with Danielle. That's one of the downsides of not having a straight job, not that assistant to a music video director was ever a straight job. Not really.
It's been about six months now, and every
single one of them has been amazing. Every day with Mal is amazing, even the shitty ones. Even when we're apart. Even when we fight.
Deep down, I know he's mine.
That eclipses everything else.
Okay, it's not like my life is suddenly void of problems. It's more that I'm satisfied in a way I've never been satisfied before.
Mal takes the exit for the California incline.
Huh?
"Are you taking the ten to the 405?" I ask.
He shakes his head.
"Are you taking streets all the way to my place?"
"No."
"To your place?"
He shrugs.
"It's going to take three hours to take streets to Huntington Beach."
