"I love you too."
"When I'm not on the road, I want to be around you all the time. I get it if you aren't ready. If you want to stay in your place in Long Beach—"
"No." I shake my head. "I'm ready. And it's amazing."
"It's farther to the beach than my dad's place."
"Only by a few blocks." Wait. The bank? "Mal, did you really buy this place?"
"Yeah. It's time. To be with you. To not live at the Huntington Beach place anymore. There are too many memories. Good ones, but—"
"Bad ones too."
He nods. "Dad won't admit it, but he can't stand it anymore. Not without Mom. Not that he's there a lot, but I figured it was time to sell it."
"That's a big step."
"Yeah."
"Are you ready?"
"Maybe." He runs his fingers through my hair. "I'll get there."
I know he will.
"I don't know if I'll ever get used to the world existing without Mom, but I'm not holding on to what could have happened. I have a lot of love in my life. I'm lucky." His voice is sweet. Soft. "And I have you. That makes me the luckiest guy in the fucking universe."
"Mal…" I rise to my tiptoes to kiss him.
"I want you forever, Lacey. Living with you is just the first step."
I want him forever too.
But first, I want him right now.
I slide my hand under his t-shirt and I kiss him hard.
And I make sure we properly christen the place as ours.
