“Wait a second… it was you! You paid the bail and got the charges dropped on my brother!” Bash accuses.

Lifting my head, I meet his eyes with mine.

“You did that for the cops, or for the case.” Bash tilts his head, unsure of my actions.

“I could have gotten him out of jail by posting his bond, I got the charges dropped because the club wouldn’t be the same without Ruin, and Bash couldn’t live with his brother in prison.” My choice to help them was personal and had nothing to do with the case.

The club goes silent as they put together what I did for them, for Ruin and Stryker.

“Y’all gave me a second chance,” Bear reminds everyone and I can’t help but be thankful for his input, and North nods in remembrance. Shit went down with his chick and everything went fucking wrong but Bear is an asset to the club and the Kings wouldn’t be who they are without him.

“Let’s see how Crow’s plan goes.” Chaos’ voice is low and gravelly, holding a deadly promise to it.

I have to make sure this goes smoothly without any hiccups.

“Why do you want to be in the club so bad?” Chaos asks, wanting to make my intentions clear to the room.

“I’m meant to be here. I don’t want to be the one chasing the bad guys, I want to be the one running from the good guys. After all this shit settles, I’m turning over my badge and I’m done whether you accept me into the club or I’m eighty-sixed. I’m a different person today than I was when I took this job. You guys are my family and this is where I fucking belong, I was always an outlaw, I just had to find my way back to see that.”

The room goes silent and I think for a second I’m going to be called a pussy for my openness. Especially seeing that I’m the one giving everyone a hard time and busting their balls, this is everyone’s chance to out me and make me a joke.

“We need him to fix this,” Bear tells the room and he’s right. This club is going to have to trust me to fix this, they don’t have a choice.

“Let’s get his saddlebags loaded up,” Chaos says on an exhale.

“I’m going with him.” Bear steps in, and everyone’s head turns in his direction.

Holy shit, I wasn’t expecting that. I mean, I know we’re good friends but he’s really going out on a limb for me. He must know I’m good for it.

“I’m going to talk to Maybelline before I head off,” I inform the room, standing.

I think they’re going to object and tell me to keep my ass right where they can see me but nobody objects, but I’m sure someone will be keeping an eye on me. Hell, maybe that’s why Bear is really coming with me, to make sure I don’t run away with the drugs and turn them in. Looks like this drive to Atlanta is going to be the key to making or breaking my ass in this club.

Walking down the driveway and across the street, Maybelline meets me at the door.

“What’d they say?” Her delicate hand cradles my face where I was hit before dropping to my arm. She gasps, her eyes filling with tears.

“Oh my God!” She runs her fingers near the inflamed skin, her face pulling into an expression of fear. Taking her by the wrist, I interlock our hands and stare into her eyes, just as I’m about to tell her to take a deep breath and that I’m okay she blurts out, “We should run. Right now, together.”

Her courage takes me by surprise. My heart beating a little harder that she wants to run away with me, she cares about me.

“We could, but I can’t keep running from who I am. I have to do this so I can settle down and be who I am meant to be.”

She shakes her head, a sob racking her whole body. My meek little mouse is about to have a heart attack from all the stress and distrust. I want to protect her and shield her from the darkness of the world but I can’t do that. I’d have to lock her up in a basement and pump sunshine into her prison to do that. So, this is the only other way I can keep her safe, I have to do this run.

“I have to make the delivery myself. Bear is coming with me. I’ll be gone a few hours but if I’m not back by tomorrow…” I glance up, finding Dime glaring at me from the other side of the counter. “Then pack up and run.”

“No, I can’t.” Her defiance comes out a mere whisper and I grab her by the chin with more force than I mean to.
