“Oh, he’s out there? Where is he?”
“None of your business.”
“Well, that’s rude. What are they saying now?” she asked.
“You always talk this much?” he muttered.
“Nobody has ever complained that I talk too much.”
“You do.”
She glared at his back. Then poked her tongue out.
“I saw that,” he said in a low, rumbly voice.
She sat back in her seat with a thump. She chewed at her thumbnail nervously, ruining Kent’s good work from the other night.
“What’s taking so long?” She shifted around on her seat.
“You need the toilet?” Bain asked.
She froze. “No.” Well, kind of. “I’m just nervous.”
“Settle in. He’ll be done soon. Your man is tough and smart.”
“Were you in the SEALs too?”
“None of your business.”
She sighed. “Are you always like this?”
“Like what?”
“Um, grumpy, untalkative.”
“Been talking more than I usually do. Shit.”
“What? What is it?” She reached for her seatbelt. Why, she didn’t know. Wasn’t like she could get out there and help.
“Stay where you are,” Bain snapped. “Markovich wants to see you.”
“Oh. Shall I get out?”
“No.”
No. Right. He didn’t want to expand on that?
“Got it,” he said.
“Got what?” she asked, confused.
This time he turned to her. “Kent is going to let Markovich talk to you, but you stick right by me. You move more than three inches away from me and I’m gonna haul you back. You disobey me and first chance I get, I’m gonna blister your ass. Don’t care if you’re the boss’s girl or not, got me?”
“I-I got you.”
“My only focus is you. You are the body I am guarding. Everything goes to shit and I will get you out of there, my focus is not on anyone else and neither is yours. I am your world right now. Got me?”
“But Kent—”
