Saving Savannah (Haven, Texas 3) - Page 47

As she stared down at the smashed glass her fear morphed into anger.

How dare he do this to her? That bastard! How dare he torture and terrorize her then talk to his girlfriend as though nothing was wrong? As though he was a loving boyfriend!

Maybe he had been. Maybe he’d hidden that side of himself so well his girlfriend had no idea what a monster he was.

Furious with him and with her own helplessness to stop him, Savannah picked up a glass and turning, threw it against the wall.

Breathing heavily, she stared at the broken glass.

Fuck.

She clenched her hands into fists and screamed. “Fuck you!”

Surprisingly, she actually felt better. The phone rang again, and she raced into the office.

“Yeah,” she half-snarled.

Nothing.

Oh, no. Hell, no. She wasn’t putting up with this. She didn’t know if this was the same person as from the other day or not and she didn’t care.

“Fuck off!” she screamed at them. “You fucking call here again, asshole, I’ll fucking tear your ear drum apart!” She slammed the phone down. Then realized she had to push end.

Crap. That wasn’t nearly as satisfying.

Savannah sat down on the sofa and snuggled into Logan. She knew she had to tell them about the flashback. And the phone calls.

“I’ve got something to speak to you both about.” Max paced in front of the television. Savannah glanced up at Logan who leaned back and pulled her even closer.

“Finally. Been wondering what the hell your problem is.”

Max glared at him. “I have to go away for a while.”

Alarm filled her. Away? Away from where? She sat up straight. “Why? What’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong.” His glare faded as he smiled at her. “It’s for work.”

“Work? What work?” Logan asked. “The ranch needs you here. We’re already behind.”

“I’m doing another job. One to bring in money.”

“Is this about all the overdue bills?” she asked.

Max’s eyes narrowed. “You know about those?”

She shrugged. “I was searching for something, and I found them in your drawer. I was going to ask you about them, but . . . well . . .”

“Well what?” he asked.

“You’ve always been a bit prickly about stuff like that.”

“Stuff like what?”

“Money and things. I didn’t want to make you feel bad because the ranch isn’t doing well.”

Max took a deep breath in then let it out slowly. “I didn’t realize I was so prickly about money.”
