The Billionaire and the Assistant (The Billionaires 3) - Page 9

“Was Eli out when the client called?”

I thought back. “Oh my God, that’s when he popped out being all mysterious and I thought he might be meeting another woman.”

“Well, newsflash. He’s made a fake date to take you out without actually asking you on a date because he wants to see how you get on. Which in Eli’s world means he’s still too chicken shit to ask. Now just make sure you look sensational tonight and I don’t know, get him drunk or something. And for heaven’s sake do not tell him that I told you everything.”

My mind was exploding over the events of the last fifteen minutes. I felt like I needed to lie down. It was like everything I’d thought before had just changed, my world tilted on its axis. Me and Eli might actually become a thing. Holy fuck!

“I won’t say a word, an

d I’m going to make sure I enjoy every minute of this business meeting.” I said. We chatted a little more and then I ended the call promising to tell her everything.

About ten minutes later the phone rang again, and I answered, a familiar British sounding voice coming down the line.

“Alexandra? Mr. Saunders here. Got to cancel by golly. Pesky headache. Tell the old boy I’m sorry and I’ll rearrange. Okay. Tata for now.”

The call ended abruptly. The bastard had cancelled. Haley was right. He was a chicken shit. I got up to make myself a coffee, kicking the trashcan over on my way past. “Fucking jerk.” I couldn’t take any more of this. He was probably doing serious damage to my ovaries and my heart. Something had to change.

I’d tidied up the trashcan debris and composed myself by the time Eli returned from his outing.

“Any messages?” He asked me, only giving my face a cursory glance.

I rattled off a few messages that had come in for him, leaving out any mention of a Terry Saunders.

“Is that all? Nothing else you’ve forgotten?”

I pretended to look at my jotter. “No, Sir. No other messages at all.”

“Oh, right. Okay then.”

Now what was he going to do?

An hour later Eli popped out again and made another call as Mr. Saunders, asking me if I’d passed the message on. “Yes, Mr. Saunders I passed it on straight away.” I replied.

But when Eli returned I once again told him there were no messages.

In the end in desperation Eli walked in to tell me Mr. Saunders had called him direct.

“Oh, I never heard your phone ring.” I said sweetly.

“Yeah, the ringers on low volume.” He said. “Anyway, you might want to cancel the reservation now. Mr. Saunders isn’t coming.”

I shook my head. “I don’t think so.”

Eli’s jaw dropped. “Excuse me?”

I folded my arms across my chest. “I’m not cancelling the reservation. I cancelled my own arrangements to make this dinner and so we shall still have a business meeting. We can talk about my future prospects as your PA or something. I’ve looked forward to eating at this restaurant for a long time so I’m still going. Either you can come with me or I’ll get myself a date and bill it all to your expense account.”

“Oh, ah,” Eli stood scratching his chin stubble, a sure sign of his nerves. “Okay, well, business dinner it is. You work hard and deserve a nice treat.” He said.

“Great. Well if it’s okay with you, I’m going to finish early today, go home and change.” I announced, grabbing my purse from the shelf behind me.

“Sure. I’ll see you there then at eight.” He replied.

I smiled. “You sure will.” I told him and walked out of the office.
