Finally, Jack nodded and walked back to his car as if he’d been here for a flippin’ Sunday brunch. Arrogance was a hideous trait to witness.
Once the guy was gone, Ryker turned to go back inside, but Braden hadn’t budged. He was still staring at the spot where Jack’s SUV had been parked.
“Don’t let him get to you,” Ryker stated. “It’s a shame about that couple, but they can’t pin any of that on us when we didn’t do it.”
Braden shook his head. “Did you see his eyes?”
“What?”
Braden looked to Ryker. “That guy. Did you look at his eyes? They seemed so familiar.”
Ryker agreed. A shiver crept up his back. He didn’t like when he got this feeling. Things never ended well.
“I don’t think he was a PI.” Braden ran a hand over the back of his neck and started heading toward the house. “We’ll talk to Mac later, but for now keep this little visit between us.”
Ryker fell into step beside him. “We need to watch our backs. Who knows who the hell this guy is.”
It was hard for Ryker to put the mysterious man out of his mind, but when he walked into the house and Laney met him in the hallway, he found himself smiling. She had the slightest baby belly, only visible when she wore something tight. Today she had on a body-hugging dress with tights and boots. She was so damn sexy.
“I wondered where you went,” she told him. “Who was at the door?”
Braden moved on into the living room, leaving Ryker and Laney in the foyer. “Nobody important,” he replied.
They hadn’t discovered the mole, yet, but it was only a matter of time. Ryker wasn’t giving up on bringing down the culprit who was hellbent on destroying the only family he’d ever known.
Laney’s arms looped around his neck. “If you’re done celebrating here, I’m ready to go
home and celebrate privately.”
Ryker whispered in her ear exactly what they would be doing in private, and Laney melted against him.
This was his woman, his forever family. They’d been his all along...all he’d had to do was reach out and claim them.
