Dirty Work: Part 1 - Page 37

They went to the casino, where Meek gave Jessica ten thousand dollars to gamble with. And she had good luck. She won at blackjack and doubled his ten thousand to twenty thousand.

Day one with him and she was in love. The only thing Meek asked for was her loyalty. But could she be loyal to him? She was heartless and had seen many murders in her young life, and been through countless of experiences from L.A. to Harlem, and didn’t know a thing about loyalty. She was only loyal to herself.

Kid had a thousand questions to ask Kip. Why had they come for him? What were the charges, if any? How did he get out? Would they come for him again?

Kip didn’t want his brother to worry about the police and his lifestyle because he had everything under control. He told Kid to relax and chill.

Kid was too revved up to relax. It had been an exciting morning, and he had a lot going through his mind. Why did I relent? he thought. He had better things to do with his time than visiting someone he despised.

Kid was riding comfortably in Kip’s minivan, which was tricked-out to fit him and his wheelchair. Kip hadn’t held anything back with the expenses to his ride, making it wheelchair-accessible for his brother. It was fully loaded with TVs and leather interior.

They were an hour from Nana’s place in Poughkeepsie, New York. Kid was still uneasy about seeing Nana. Why? Why?

It was early evening when Kip helped Kid from the minivan and wheeled him toward the over-the-top retirement community Nana was stashed in.

Kid looked at the white, two-story building with the towering pillars and shook his head in disgust. He knew it was expensive. Nana had Kip eating out of the palm of her hands.

They entered the building, Kip signed in, and they headed toward the elevators.

Before knocking on her door, Kip looked at his brother and asked, “You gonna be cool? You gonna behave yourself while you here?”

“What am I? Five years old?”

“Nana don’t need the extra stress from you, Kid.”

“Then why bring me in the first place? You already know how I feel about her, Kip.”

Kip sighed. “Just be nice to her, Kid. Just this once.”

“I’ll try, but I’m not making any promises.”

Kip knocked on Nana’s door.

“Who?” Nana asked from the other side of the door.

Kip hollered, “Hey, Nana, you got visitors.”

She didn’t hesitate to open her door. Seeing Kid there too, she was shocked. She smiled. “Oh, my. Both my boys came to see me today.”

She hugged Kip. When she went to hug Kid, he was aloof with a weak greeting. ?

?Come in! Come in!” she said.

Nana was dressed in a blue muumuu, house slippers, and her hair was in curlers. She closed the door and grabbed a walking cane from out the corner.

Kip was surprised. Last time he’d seen her, she was walking fine. “Nana, what happened? Why the cane?”

“Oh, I’m an old woman getting older, Kip,” she said. “Lately, my knee’s been bothering me, and it’s my back.”

“Nana, sit and relax. We here now.”

“You two boys are looking so handsome. I’m so proud to call y’all my sons.”

Kid rolled his eyes and sighed under his breath.

Kip shot a displeased look at him.
