Bucked (The Invincibles 6) - Page 113

“Ironically, we were just discussing how hungry we were,” said Stella, walking over to join me.

“Best brisket ever,” said Cord, carrying in a large platter covered in foil. “If I do say so myself.”

“I don’t bring much to this party other than my guitar,” said Holt, trailing behind Cord.

“This is very sweet,” Stella said, walking over to help Flynn uncover some of the other dishes.

“I’m sorry I forgot about your mail,” I overheard my sister say.

It was probably for the best since, no matter what, I would’ve wanted the package checked out before Stella opened it.

“We were so busy in the kitchen; we didn’t get the chance to eat much,” said Porter, picking up a piece of brisket with his fingers. “Mind if we hang out and eat with you?”

I looked back over to where Stella and Flynn stood talking. “We’d love it,” Stella answered after saying something to my sister that I didn’t hear.

I couldn’t remember the last time I sat down to a meal with my siblings and heard so much laughter. I also couldn’t help but think a lot of it had to do with Stella.

She had the ability to draw each of them out. I felt as though I learned more about my brothers and sister tonight than I ever would have on my own.

Porter, for example, had far more interest in the roughstock business than running the dude ranch. That was Cord’s and Flynn’s passion.

Holt, on the other hand, hemmed and hawed until Stella asked him outright if his dream was to pursue a career in music.

“That leaves th

e rest of the ranch,” I said, trying to make it sound like a joke, but failing miserably.

“Well, I could help,” Holt said, looking directly at me.

“So could I,” said Cord.

“Or course we’ll all help,” said Porter.

I looked from face to face, not having any idea what to say. Did they really think I intended to run the ranch?

“Buck?” said Stella, resting her hand on mine. “Did you tell them our plans to live in the farmhouse?”

“Really?” gasped Flynn.

“We’ve been talking about it,” I mumbled.

Flynn jumped up and threw her arms around my neck. “I’m so happy,” she said, kissing my cheek before moving over to Stella. “And there will be another woman in the family. This is the best news! See?” She looked at each of my brothers. “I knew everything would work out.”

“Is everything okay?” Stella asked after my family left.

“Everything’s fine. By the way, what were you and Flynn talking about before we sat down to eat?”

“Nothing really. I asked where Porter’s date was, and she said she’d left shortly after we did. What else is bothering you?”

“Nothing.”

She wrapped her arms around my waist. “No lying. Are you angry I told them about living in the farmhouse?”

“Definitely not. I’m glad you’re excited about it.”

“What is it, then?”

“They all just assume I’ll take over the ranch.”
