Apparently she managed to doze. She woke with a start when she realized that she was no longer alone on the narrow table. “What—”
“You were shivering,” Daniel murmured, wrapping an arm around her. “I don't have a blanket, but I can offer body heat.”
She was cold, she realized groggily. She had drawn into a tight ball on the cushions and she was shivering. Daniel's warmth against her back felt good, but still—
“I don't think this is a very good idea.”
“We're just going to sleep,” he assured her, nestling her more snugly against him. “We've slept together before. Our first night here, remember?”
Yes, but that had been in a bed. A bed so large they'd slept the entire night without even brushing against each other.
“Go to sleep, B.J. Tomorrow is soon enough to start fretting again.”
It seemed easier to do as he suggested than to argue. Enjoying the warmth wrapped around her, she let herself sink into oblivion again.
It wasn't quite dawn the next time she awoke. The sky was just beginning to lighten to charcoal rather than the inky black of midnight. And she and Daniel were nestled more snugly than two pages in a closed bo
ok.
Holding her breath, she lay very still, trying to decide if he was asleep. His breathing was deep and even, each slow exhale brushing against the back of her neck like a teasing caress.
Through her clothing she felt the warmth radiating from his body. A body she could feel in some detail. Biceps, pecs, abs—the man was definitely well-developed from waist up.
As for waist down—
His thighs were solid against the backs of hers. And the bulge against her hip was substantial.
“Are you awake?” His voice was a low rumble in her ear.
Oh, yeah. She was suddenly wide awake. “Uh-huh,” was all she managed to say.
“Cold?”
Hardly. “Uh-uh.”
“Did you get any sleep?”
“Some. You?”
“Couple hours. I guess a hard picnic table can be pretty comfortable, huh?”
She moistened her lips. “Apparently.”
Without thinking, she shifted her weight. The movement pressed her more snugly against his groin, a wholly unpremeditated result.
“Then again,” Daniel said, his voice suddenly hoarse, “maybe it's not so comfortable, after all.”
She moved instinctively to shift into a less intimate position. Unfortunately Daniel moved at the same time, and they ended up more entangled than before.
B.J. froze before she could get into even more trouble. There was just enough light for her to see Daniel's rather pained expression. She knew she must look mortified.
“Maybe we should just get up,” she said in exasperation.
His sudden crooked smile flashed, and even in the faint light she could see the wickedness in it. He didn't have to say a word.
She forced herself to frown at him, trying to speak evenly despite the rapid beating of her heart. “Behave yourself.”
“I know I should,” he murmured reflectively. But he didn't move.
