I leaned into his side slightly and smiled. “It is. I told Kendra too.”
“You did?”
“Yeah, it’s impossible to keep anything from her for long. She suspected I was seeing someone, then she started grilling me and…she’s relentless. I caved.”
“What did she say?”
“She didn’t say anything at first. She just screamed. But it was a happy scream.”
He flashed a radiant grin. “That’s good. Since we’re seeing each other, I should take you out for real. What are you doing tonight?”
“Going out with you, I think.”
“Good answer. We’ll do something sort of romantic—nothing crazy, don’t worry. Then we’ll go back to my place and fool around. In my bed. We need to get horizontal. This vertical stuff is dangerous. I almost scraped my poor dick when I pulled my zipper up too fast in the student lounge bathroom. I’m up for BJs anywhere, any time, but I need to be fully intact for other things.”
I twisted to face him on the bench, grinning like a fool. “What kinds of things?”
“Sex things.”
“Mmm. I want to do those things,” I said softly.
Logan’s gaze took on a lust-hazed look and when he spoke again, his husky voice moved through me, warming me to the core. “We will, baby.”
He pushed his knee against mine and leaned sideways like he was going to steal a kiss. We were tucked behind a large hedge, but it was still a risky maneuver on a Wednesday at lunchtime. He shifted on the bench and let out a frustrated growl.
“What are you doing?” I asked, setting my hand on his thigh.
Logan groaned. “I’m trying to rein in my crotch monster.”
“Your what?” I snorted.
“You heard me. My pocket rocket is taking a stretch in my jeans. The one-eyed trouser snake is looking for an escape route. Go ahead and laugh, but this is kind of uncomfortable. Whatever you do, don’t move a muscle.”
I wiggled my pinky finger, chuckling when he grabbed my wrist and gave me the evil eye. I batted my lashes and smiled. “Sorry.”
“You’re not sorry. This is torture. I don’t think I can—”
“Logan!”
He slammed the book shut and positioned it over his crotch, pasting a weak smile on his face as his ex-girlfriend made her way along the path toward our bench.
“Hey, Kelly. How’s it going? I don’t know if you’ve met my friend, Ned. Ned, this is Kelly, Kelly…Ned. We’re doing a little studying before I go to practice.”
She nodded pleasantly, but the “WTF” in her expression was hard to miss.
I scooted sideways and inclined my head in greeting. “Hi.”
“Nice to see you again, Ned.” Her tone was a little too perky and maybe…hurt? I couldn’t tell. She turned to Logan and lowered her sunglasses. “I miss college hockey. How often is the team practicing? I heard that…”
I studied Kelly’s fine, pretty features, noting her designer bag and her small but tasteful diamond earrings. Her sophisticated air was subtle, but potent. Looks-wise, Logan and she must have been an attractive couple. They were both good-looking, confident, and probably shared a lot of the same friends. However, I noticed the tense set of Logan’s shoulders and his guarded speech. He was friendly, but distant. A sure sign he wasn’t having fun, I mused as I tuned into their conversation.
“…and I still have a lot to do before graduation,” Logan said.
“Same here. Hey, my dad asked about you. He told me that he saved a spot for you in his South Bay branch.”
Logan scratched the back of his neck and grimaced. “Uh…that’s nice, Kel, but did you tell him we’re not together anymore?”
“Of course, he knows. But he also knows we’re still friends, and he knows you’re a smart guy and a hard worker. His secretary will probably get in touch with you. You should talk to her.”
“Um…okay. Wow. That’s great.”
“Yeah. It’ll be nice to work together too. As friends,” she added quickly. She turned for the path, then stopped abruptly and snapped her fingers. “Hey, one more thing. If my dad asks if you’re seeing someone else, I think you’ll want to be discreet about it. He’s old-fashioned and…you know how that goes. See you, Logan. Bye, Ned.”
He furrowed his brow as he stared after her. “Okay, that was…weird.”
“Sounds like you have a job. Congrats.”
Logan hummed. “I think there are a few strings attached to that offer.”
“Are you going to talk to him?”
“I don’t know, and I’d rather not think about it right now. I have time.”
“That’s funny. I feel like I’m running out of time. I have an online interview for another firm in the Bay Area tomorrow. If it goes well, they may fly me up there for a second round. It would be great if it coincided with the other interview, but…we’ll see what happens,” I swiped my palms on my jeans, feeling suddenly anxious.
I admired Logan’s laid-back style, but I couldn’t relate. The last month and a half before graduation was critical for me. If I didn’t act now, I’d end up with limited choices.
