She sighed and took a sip of her mojito, surveying the guys on the dance floor. They not only looked like babies, but they didn’t give the slightest impression of being bad. A little sleazy maybe, but not the kind of guys who knew how to tie a girl up and make her orgasm until she fainted.
Boring.
Sadie was chattering to Juliet and dancing in her chair midway through sangria number two, and as soon as she emptied her glass she hopped up and dragged Juliet onto the dance floor.
They danced and laughed for all of a minute before the sharks started to circle—guys dancing too close, smiling in invitation.
“You should hook up with someone,” Sadie yelled in her ear, barely audible over the music.
“These infants? I feel like I’m chaperoning a high school dance.”
Sadie rolled her eyes. “That Will guy has a kid now, Jules. I thought that was a hard no for you. The doctor is prescribing you casual sex.”
“You’re a nurse, not a doctor.”
“Hey, man, you know how it is,” her sister said, glaring. “I write the orders—the doctor just signs them.”
Juliet sighed, not that Sadie would be able to hear it in this din. “I can’t just jump some guy. It would only remind me how much better Will is compared to these guys.”
“More than just the kink?”
“Ugh. Yes.”
“Girl, you’re doomed. Let’s get you another drink.” Sadie grabbed her hand and led her back to the bar, where they got another round. Some guy tried to pay for their drinks, then hung around trying to chat them up. By one a.m. they were both tipsy and tired, and Juliet’s face hurt from laughing. Sadie was her closest sister in age, even though they were four years apart. They were completely different in temperament. Sadie was full of energy and always ready to have a good time even if they just went grocery shopping together. Sadie was the best possible match for Scotty, too, who’d she’d been sexting and Snapchatting with all night. Romantic idiots.
On the way home in the cab, Sadie turned her bleary gaze to Juliet.
“Give me your phone,” she said, holding out her hand.
“Your own phone is in your hand, weirdo.”
“Fine, then. Give me Will’s number.”
“No!” Juliet said, swatting her. “You are not drunk-dialing him.”
“I need to talk to this guy.”
“What on earth do you want to talk to him about?”
Sadie hugged Juliet and wrestled her phone out of her hand.
“Don’t you dare!”
The cabdriver was laughing.
With her superhuman mother-of-twins powers, she scrolled through Juliet’s phone while fending her off.
“Sadie, no!”
Juliet held her breath as her sister’s thumb hovered over the green phone icon.
Grinning at Juliet, Sadie pressed it.
Fuck.
Sadie put the phone to her ear and swatted Juliet away with a final smack. “Hello, Will? This is Sadie. I’m Juliet’s favorite sister.” Sadie snickered. “Yes. We were just at a bar and we’re very, very drunk.” She waited for a moment, grinning at Juliet while she listened. “Wow, he’s hot!” Sadie stage-whispered to Juliet without bothering to cover the phone.
“You can tell he’s hot just from his voice?” Juliet asked, laughing. Knowing he was at the other end of the line made her nervous, as if he were a celebrity she had a crush on rather than a guy she’d already slept with.
