“Might as well have been. Driver says it was the Skinz.”
“Raul probably paid them. Fuckin’ bastard.”
“You know what he wants. The tunnels.”
No, he wants everything.
But he can’t have it.
He can’t have her.
No one can.
She’s mine.
“Send out a new truck.”
“Is that wise right now?”
“Just do it.” I end the call and toss my phone on the bed.
“Hey,” Ainsley croaks and kisses my shoulder. “Everything okay?”
“Nothing for you to worry about.”
Her arms go around me. “Then come back to bed.”
I wish I could. I get lost in her all too easily so much so sometimes I lose sight of everything I am trying to protect including her. “You sleep. I’m going to hit the gym.”
“It’s so early, and I won’t sleep without you.”
“You’re spoiled.” I scoot back and lean against the headboard.
“So are you.” She moves between my legs. Her fingers wrap around me, but I have too much on my mind.
“C’mere.” I pull her into my lap. Her head moves to my shoulder, and I run my fingers through her hair and hold her tight. “I just want to hold you.”
My wife stays quiet and it isn’t long before she is back asleep. I wait for her breathing to even out and lay her next to me. I have to keep her safe. Both of them. Her and our baby.
As soon as my feet hit the floor Petunia wakes and is eager to go out back to do her business. I scoop her up in my arms and hold her like a football while I walk down the stairs. I let her out the back door and keep it cracked enough for her to come back in on her own.
Going through the motions, I start the coffee pot. Ainsley can’t drink the stuff, but she loves the smell. I grab my cigarettes and step onto the back patio and light one up. Maybe I should turn the Skinz on Raul. Those bastards will do anything for a little yayo. I have plenty to spare. I still have more than half of what I lifted off the Colombians. The new head of the Colombian Cartel, Alejandro López is looking to make things right between our houses.
It’s a tempting offer. I did him a favor by taking out his competition. He owes me. I’m a biker, but I can see a bigger picture. What tempted my late father-in-law and made him the man he became. I don’t want that kind of power, but it is within my reach, and I may not have a choice other than embracing it. I can give Ainsley the life she deserves. I finish my cigarette and take Petunia back inside with me.
I go into my office and pull a burner out of the bottom drawer. “Let’s meet.”
“Neutral territory.”
“Name the time and place. I’ll be there. Don’t pull any funny shit.”
Ending the call, I go back upstairs and text Uno.
Prez- We ride out soon. Need everything in place.
Uno – I’ll handle it.
With that shit decided, I crawl back in bed and decide that I do want to get lost for a few hours anyway.
