Live Free (Lords of Mayhem 3) - Page 27

“Did I miss something?” Evonne leaned against him, peering up.

“No, he just realized he isn’t ever going to get into your pants,” Rocky said.

“Thank God.”

Rocky chuckled. “First time I ever heard anyone say that shit.”

“Is that why you get a kick out of it?” She asked.

“Always amusing to see someone who needs it…put in their place.”

She shook her head. “Men.”

“If I’m cock blocking, let me know,” Rocky said, holding up his hands.

“Please,” she huffed.

He hid his smile, grateful when Tiny came out and they all lined up to ride.

It felt good making the trek with Evonne behind him, pressed against his back like a pro. She leaned into the curves, holding his waist tighter. Her thick thighs pressed against his, and he forgot himself, reaching down to cover her hand with his own. They reached their destination and she climbed off the back, leaving him slightly bereft. He watched her join the other old ladies and caught Tiny staring at him.

“She looks good on the back of your bike, brother,” Tiny said.

He couldn’t say fuck you to the President, so he let his expression speak for him.

Tiny laughed and clapped him on the back. “You don’t even know how fucked you are yet.”

Trust me, I know, boss, I’m just past the point of giving a fuck. Rocky kept his eyes on her as she spoke with the different men on his way inside the building. Wary of the other crew, he stalked over, wound his fingers in her hair and kissed her, cutting off her conversation in midsentence.

Her body relaxed into his and she moaned in the back of her throat.

They broke apart and he grinned. “We’ll finish this later.” He leaned in and brushed his lips against her ear. “Had to let the other crew know you were spoken for.” With a quick pat to her ass, he strode away, more pleased with himself than he should be.

Chapter Six

Evonne leaned back against the couch, pleased to have downtime with her friends. As things happened it was harder and harder to have moments like these.

“So how are you doing?” Juliette asked.

Evonne glanced up from her seat on the couch. “Better. Rocky’s been taking me to the gym two or three times a week. It helps me work out aggression and not feel—like a bump on a log, waiting for something to happen to me.” She sighed. “That’s the hardest part, the waiting. I mean, how does a man just disappear? How did this even happen?”

Juliette took sip of her wine. “That’s a question I asked myself many times and never came up with a satisfying answer. I could tell you all day long how people are fucked up and it’s not your fault. But it’s something you have to reconcile with inside yourself. Anytime we’re deceived by others, we look to ourselves. Why didn’t we see it? How was our radar so busted? Truth is…some people make a living out of lies. It’s as easy as breathing to them and their survival depends on their seamless performance. Why us? Luck of the draw? I don’t know. We’re not psychos and a sit-down one-on-one with them is out, so we’ll never fully understand it.”

“How do you deal?” Evonne whispered.

“I decided letting it affect me too much would be allowing Peter to win. I worked too damn hard for that to happen.” Juliette shook her head. “Mine is different. My scars run deeper and it took over a year to really get out of the corroded forest of my mind. It kills me now, watching that poison spill over into your lives.” She shook her head.

“Hey, you couldn’t stop this.” Evonne reached out and grabbed her hand.

Juliette laughed. “And yet I still feel responsible.”

She gazed intently at Evonne, and they exchanged knowing expressions.

“Jeez, aren’t we in Mary Sunshine mode,” Evonne joked.

Juliette laughed. “Let’s talk about something else, like you and Rocky.”

“What’s to tell?” Evonne shrugged.
