I sat down on my chair. “I’m not sure.”
What if we could make it work? Our relationship and my job? Carter would get over it, eventually. Maybe there was a way for us to be together, and I wouldn’t have to give up on him.
But was I ready to fight for both? Even Sierra agreed it would be for the best to forget about Merritt and be smart about this, especially because there was a lot at stake here.
“Are you sick?”
I smiled at Megan, masking my displeasure. “Just tired. I haven’t slept much.”
“Tell me about it. I can’t catch up on sleep these days at all. That’s what you get when you have a baby in the house.”
I just grinned at her and looked at the cup of coffee Merritt had left on my desk. As if following a cue, a sense of longing washed over me. I needed to think about this carefully. I would give myself a few days.
Maybe I would get over him
And hell, maybe I wouldn’t.

Merritt
A few days had passed since I saw Camilla last, and I still wasn’t over it. I tried forgetting about her by going out and drinking, but it was all useless. Carter gave up on me, calling me whipped, when we sat down in a bar and I couldn’t even flirt back with the women that were sitting next to us.
“Damn, man. She really must be something if you can’t get over her. I’m surprised that she flat out rejected you for the second time.”
“Yeah? Me too.”
“But it’s not the end of the world. Cheer up. You’ll meet someone new—”
“I wouldn’t be so sure about that,” I replied bitterly.
“Well, if you would stop being so bitchy about this whole situation and chill, you’d see that she couldn’t be that special. Give yourself a few days and you’ll completely forget about her.”
If he only knew the truth, he would recognize how special she was. But still I hoped Carter was right because there wasn’t a day that I didn’t think about her. The urge to search for her in her office was strong, but I was going to keep my word. As hard as it was, I wouldn’t see her again.
I was on my way to my office when Tim greeted me in the hallway. “Hi, Merritt.”
“Hey, man. Tough night?” I pointed at the dark circles beneath his eyes.
“That’s mildly putting it.” He sighed. “Marlene.”
I raised my eyebrow. “You two are back together?”
“We were back together. We broke up again last night.”
“Damn. That was quick. Why?”
“Because she cheated on me. Imagine that. She’s been calling me a cheater all this time, when she’s the one who can’t keep her legs closed.”
“I’m sorry, bro.”
“That’s okay. It’s high time to give up on her and move on. I can’t keep going around in circles.”
I opened my mouth to answer him, but then it struck me how much I related to that. I was stuck on Camilla and couldn’t think about anyone else but her. Just like he was stuck on Marlene.
A minute later, I got into my office, wondering if what I felt for Camilla was much stronger than I had thought.
I lowered my briefcase on my desk, and that was when I saw a note sitting on it. Surprised, I picked up the small piece of paper. It contained Camilla’s phone number with a simple “Call me” on it and her name.
