“What did you tell them?”
“That I hadn’t seen him.”
“What else did they say?”
“Oh, one of them thought he would come into my house and look around, but I told him that wasn’t a good idea.”
Hunter looked at Sam. “Were they armed?”
“The pistols were in their holsters.”
“And yours wasn’t.”
Sam said, “Anyhow, the bearded man said they would go back and look some more along the trail, and they flew off.”
Raymond said, “Would you describe them?”
“Sure, They looked fit, mid thirties, maybe five-ten, five-eleven. Brown hair, couldn’t see the eyes because of their sunglasses. One had a trimmed beard. They were dressed in store bought camo.”
“Were they Americans?”
“The bearded one was. The other one had a slight accent, so I’m not sure about him.”
Hunter said, “And they were the ones who shot our guy.”
“That’s what Miguel said. He saw them from my bedroom window.”
“Why did they shoot him?”
“Said he didn’t know, but thought it must have been because of him seeing the man who fell from the sky.”
“Yeah, we found tracks that showed your Miguel was there and that he buried the guy.”
They talked a few minutes more, and then Hunter said, “Which way did Miguel go when he took off from here?”
“I didn’t see.”
Hunter said, “Sam, if those men in the copter were hunting him, you know they aren’t through. Help us out here so we can find Miguel and protect him.”
“I didn’t see. You’re welcome to look anyplace you want.”
Hunter sighed and rose, “I guess we’ll take you up on that, then. Thanks for the tea.”
They found Miguel’s tracks in several places near the house, but lost them after an hour in the rocky foothills behind the ranch headquarters. Raymond pulled off his hat and funneled the brim as he scanned the area and said, “If he’s up in these rocks, we won’t find anything until he leaves them and starts walking where there’s a little dust. What do you want to do?”
Hunter said, “Call it quits for now. We can check again later. How about we go to Presidio tomorrow and talk to Lee Rodriguez, see if he has any idea about who owns that helicopter?”
“I’m for that.”
Hunter said, “Maybe we can meet at the Oasis and grab a bite while we’re talking.”
“You sure you don’t have a tapeworm?”
Hunter grinned as she fished the keys out of her pocket.
