Home Run (The Boys of Summer 2) - Page 51

“What do you want?”

I close my eyes and tell myself that I deserve the hostility in his voice.

“I want to talk about today.”

“There’s nothing to talk about,” he says.

“I have some things I need to say—” Before I can finish, his name is called by a female voice, and he tells her that he’ll be right there. My heart drops, realizing that my mom was right all along.

“Look, Ainsley, I gotta go.”

“Are you with someone right now?” I ask, knowing the answer is going to kill me.

“What do you care?”

“I do, Cooper, that’s why I’m calling.”

He laughs. “We both knew how this was going to end. No need to drag it out for two more weeks. Thanks for the good time, Ainsley.” He hangs up before I can say anything to him. Those words…they sting, but they’re not him. He doesn’t talk like that.

Unless he does and was only putting on an act in order to get me into bed.

“No,” I say out loud shaking my head. “I refuse to believe it.”

“Believe what?” one of the nurses asks, stopping in front of me. I’ve seen her around before, but she’s not one of my mom’s usual nurses.

“That my sort-of boyfriend used me for a good time.”

“Yeah,” she sighs. “That happens a lot around here. Women get starry-eyed when the players come to town. They turn stupid, really.”

She goes back to work, leaving my mouth wide open in shock. Why did she assume I was dating a baseball player? Is that what all the single women do during the months of February and March?

Unsatisfied by my conversation with Cooper, I call him back, only to be sent right to voice mail. He’s either quick with the ignore button or he’s shut his phone off.

There’s only one way to get through to him, and that is to go see him. I call Stella and ask her to come sit with mom so I can go fix things with Cooper. Face-to-face is the only way this will work. He needs to know that, come the end of the month, I’ll still be here.

HYPE!!!

Cooper Bailey is nothing but hype. And where the hell is he? Why isn’t he playing? The fans would like to know what happened to the guy who was batting .393 last year in Pawtucket? Did he suddenly forget how to play?

I’m sorry, Mr. Bailey, the fans are expecting big things from you and you’re not producing.

Management may need to rethink Bailey as Bainbridge’s replacement because batting barely .100 is not going to suffice in the majors, even with his stellar defensive abilities.

Many have pointed out his lackluster performance could be because of his recent breakup with his girlfriend, but honestly, this has been going on from the beginning of spring training.

We’re not sure what Diamond is thinking, but let’s hope things change when the Renegades return to Boston.

The city of Boston will be holding a parade from downtown to Lowery Field on Sunday, celebrating the return of our team. Lowery Field will be open for free tours. It’s highly suggested you book now.

The autograph session starts at three—line up early!

The season officially kicks off when the Indians come to town. It should be noted that first pitch is at 4:10 p.m.

Welcome home, Renegades!
