“What is it?”
“We did it! We’re pregnant!” I cry out. I watch his face split into the biggest smile I’ve ever seen and he laughs, pulling me in for a long kiss. We hug hard and I can feel happy tears streaming from my eyes. All of my plans seem so much more solid now. My future is forming inside me once again, and it’s a feeling that can never be replaced. It’s beautiful and scary and sobering all at once. I’m suddenly aware of all the responsibility it will entail. All the late nights with no sleep and all the time spent worrying after a baby who I’m fully responsible for. I feel like I did the first time, scared I won’t be good enough for my baby…
“You’re amazing,” Clay growls, reading my thoughts. “You’re an amazing mother to Ada and you’ll be an amazing mother to our new baby. And the next. And the next.”
I feel my face splitting from smiling. He’s right. We’ve got this far. Everything is going to be okay. I laugh out loud, completely overwhelmed with elation. We kiss again and as Clay holds me in his arms, I know my life is perfect. Sure, things get hard sometimes. Sure, I don’t always know what I’m doing. But Clay and I will get through it together, side by side.
And now, our future has another dash of perfection added to it.

Chapter One
Teagan
It’s so typical for something like this to happen to me. I’m standing outside my apartment at two am, in the rain, in my pajamas, waiting to be allowed back inside. Someone made a call earlier in the night saying they could smell gas and now everyone in the building has been evacuated. I’m shivering as I stand alone in the dark, my arms wrapped around myself. I’m hoping it’s a false alarm because all I really want is to get back in bed. This isn’t exactly how I wanted to start off my weekend.
I clutch my phone like a lifeline. It’s on low battery so I probably only have the ability to make one call if I really need to. I bounce up and down on the balls of my feet, waiting for permission to go back inside.
A fireman exits the building and shakes his head at the night receptionist, who visibly sighs. It’s not looking good. The receptionist turns to the rest of us.
“You’re all going to have to find somewhere to stay for a few days. There’s definitely a leak in the building.”
A collection of groans ripple through the crowd and people immediately spring into action, heading for their cars and making phone calls to relatives. I feel the panic rise inside me. I could call my Dad, but he’s not even in the state. He’s gone with his girlfriend on a trip to Las Vegas. Still, he’s the only person who will likely pick up if I call at such a ridiculous hour. I dial his number and wait for him to pick up.
“Hello, darling! What are you doing up so late?” my father asks as he picks up. I can hear the noise of the casino he’s at in the background. I sigh.
“I’ve run into a problem. There’s been a gas leak at my apartment. And I have nowhere to stay for the night.”
“Can’t you book a hotel?”
“Dad, I’m kind of low on money. And besides, I don’t have my card with me. It’s all inside the apartment and I’m not allowed back in. Dad, please, my phone is about to die…”
“Alright, sweetheart, don’t worry. You know what I’ll do? I’ll send Kian to come and get you.”
