The Player Hater (Accidentally in Love 1) - Page 40

Erik and Cookie are also canoodling, but in that weird, conniving looking way that gave me the skeeves on my first night here.

What was it Juliet said about them? That they’re probably definitely swingers?

I shrink back, not wanting to appear too friendly, grateful they haven’t approached me to bang them. I’m not the threesome or foursome type, thank you very much.

“I know what you’re thinking.”

Beside me, Juliet has put down the pine cone and has the White Claw back in her hand.

“What am I thinking?”

She moves closer, lowering her voice. “You’re thinking…it was probably Cookie outside the camper last night coming to get you.”

“Pfft. It hadn’t crossed my mind.” I pause to add, “Wait. You were trashed, how do you remember anything about last night?”

“Eh, once I throw up I’m usually fine—not that I get drunk all the time, because I don’t. The last time I threw up from drinking was probably college.” She sips on her drink. “Anyways, she’s definitely interested.”

“Would you be quiet? They’re old enough to be our parents.”

Juliet laughs. “Oh come on, don’t be so dramatic and stop playing so hard to get.”

“Listen—all I can tell you is I’m really fucking glad we’re leaving tomorrow. I feel like they’re working up their courage to come over here, so she can fondle my nut sac.”

Juliet’s eyes widen. “You have a high opinion of yourself! Maybe they want to come over here so he can cop a feel of my boobs.”

“Doubtful. It’s me they’re after.”

When she laughs, it’s so loud the entire group stops what they’re doing to look over.

“Would you like to share with the rest of the class what you find so funny?” Lionel asks, his hand sliding over his wife’s knee.

“Sorry—I had something caught in the back of my throat.”

And it wasn’t my dick.

I laugh at my own private joke, joining her, the pair of us idiotically giggling like two fools.

“Poor you, you’re so sexy that older women are lusting after you in front of their husbands. Boo hoo.”

“Did you just call me sexy?” First she admits she thinks I’m good-looking, now she’s admitting she thinks I’m sexy?

Woohoo!!!

She groans. “Ugh—here we go again, stop quoting me. I was being facetious.”

“Eh? Try not using such big words.”

“I was being flippant. Joking. Teasing.”

“Liar.” I settle back into my chair, confident she finds me attractive, all is right with the world.

And tonight, she’s not drunk and I won’t have to babysit her back to the camper, which makes the evening that much better. Perhaps tonight I’ll get a good night’s rest.

Not likely on that deplorable bed, but a guy can dream.

“You’re calling me a liar? How do you know you’re even my type—some people may not be into you.” Her eyes give me another once-over. “What you’ve got going on here.”

“What I’ve got going on here?” I repeat. “What exactly is it you think I’ve got going on?” Seriously, I want to know.

“Stop fishing for compliments, it’s beneath you.”

“No seriously, what is it you think I’ve got going on?” Because I haven’t shaved in three days, I’m wearing the same jeans, and my pits probably reek like the garlic from the barbeque sauce.

CHAPTER 7

Juliet

“For pity’s sake, Davis—cut the false modesty act.”

“False modesty? I’m as humble as they come.”

Obviously I don’t believe him; men as good-looking as Davis couldn’t possibly be modest, could they? I’ve certainly never met a man who was even half this attractive who wasn’t an arrogant prick.

Could Davis possess all the qualities of the perfect man as if he were created especially for me and dropped down in the middle of the woods?

Funny, kind, giving.

Tall, dark, handsome.

Stronger than strong.

Burly, even.

Even his five o’clock shadow is doing it for me in a big way and I normally don’t go for stubble on a man; usually love a freshly shaved jawline given that I’m anti-beard burn.

Ha!

Dream on, Juliet.

I have an idea. “How about you describe yourself to me instead.”

His eyes dart to Thad and Mia, who have long given up on us as entertainment for the evening. In fact, I can hear them whispering about sneaking off, wondering if I’ll be fine here with Davis, so they can spend their last night screwing their brains out buck naked in the woods as God intended.

Oy vey.

“You want me to tell you what I’ve got going on here?” He gestures up and down his own body, beer bottle in his large, strong hand.

“Sure. Go for it.”

He’s quiet a few moments as he gathers his thoughts. “Alright, well. Let’s see…who am I, who am I…” His head tilts back, resting on the back of the chair as he gazes up at the sky, avoiding direct eye contact. “Okay, If I were to build a profile on a dating site, this is what I might say to describe myself.”

I wait.

“Tall, hardworking man who values family. Good communicator. Honest.” Davis pauses again to think, finally turning his face to look at me. “I live with intention.”
