The Woodland Packs - Page 102

“It’s not luck. There’s something else going on here. I just need to figure it out.”

“What do you mean?” Brad asked, eating himself through half a leftover pizza.

“It’s too much of a coincidence. That the bears have always been our enemies… that they came for Claire when they found out she was a mate of ours. Now to know that OUR mate dated a man who was abusive, and now keeps constant tabs on her… it’s too much to be left to coincidence.”

“He’s big like you too, and the bear we ran into in the forest was aiming to take her car out specifically. He was a black—they’re Alphas I believe,” Brad finished off for me.

Aaron groaned after he downed his beer. “So, we need to find out more about this ex of hers, and if all of this is some sort of crazy coincidence, or if the bears are finding our mates and keeping them from us.”

“Oh my God. Imagine if that were true.” I stared at my pack, my friends, my family.

The very idea that was possible completely floored me.

There could be so many women out there under the same threat.

“This could be so much bigger than we know,” Aaron said with a massive sigh.

I nodded, my gut tightening and gripping with fear for my mate.

Sure, I’d felt anxious, tired, hurt, even depressed over the fact that I may never have a mate.

But now that we’d met her, and I knew she was next door—well, my wolf was pacing and circling inside of me like a restless animal.

“We sort out our mate first. We need to get Nevaeh to trust us, love us. Then we can find out if this is part of a bigger plan to keep our mates away. The whole pack may need to know.”

We went to bed early, and I tossed and turned all night.

I needed my mate beside me. In my arms, in my house, in my life.

And tomorrow, I would find a way to have it all.

Chapter 7.

Nevaeh.

Claire gave me a sleeping tablet, and I still had a bad night’s sleep.

I kept seeing that massive bear coming for me.

And my guilty conscience weighed on me like a fridge laying across my chest.

I’d lied to them.

I did know who that bear was that attacked my car last night. Or, I think I did.

It was Trevor, my ex. Or one of his biker friends.

They all turned into bears, or so Trevor said. Deadly, vicious bears.

And he’d said that if I told anyone, he’d kill me. One of his many, many threats.

I’d tried to block so much of that part of my life out. Away. Hidden in the depths of my subconscious.

But here it all was. Spilling out for the world to see.

“Good morning,” Claire said as she opened the door to my bedroom—Jay’s bedroom.

“Oh, hey.” I sat up, wearing some of Claire’s spare joggers and a tank.
