She leans her head against my arm. “You never lost it. I will love you until the day I die.”
My stomach rumbles and we both laugh.
“This is terrible timing but I’m really hungry.”
She scrambles off the bed and grabs my hands. “Um, this is me you’re talking to. It’s never a bad time for food.”
I follow her to the kitchen and open the fridge. We have stuff for sandwiches and some leftover frozen pizza. I pull out the sandwich fixings while Anya opens the pantry. When she comes back she has a package of Oreos and a bag of cheese pretzels.
“It’s been a long night. I’m eating everything.”
“Trust me. I’m not judging.”
My phone dings with a text message. I pull it out of my pocket and see it’s a new message from Mya. I’m almost afraid to open it. It’s finally sinking in that I just made a flaming fool of myself in front of several employees and quite a few clients.
But I have to check it. She might have a legitimate issue with the event.
After reading it, I put the phone down. “Mya got the cabaret account.”
Anya grins. “Of course she did. That woman is a badass.”
“Hell yeah, she is. She invited them to the GlowUp gala. According to her, their CEO reported this as the most exciting event he’s been to in ages.”
“It’s not every day a wild man comes running in missing a shoe.”
Laughing, we bundle everything on a tray and take our little snack back to the bedroom. We eat in companionable silence then I put the tray on the dresser. After I turn out the lights, Anya slips under the covers. I climb in next to her and rest my head on the pillow.
She sighs.
I sigh.
“This is what I’ve been missing.”
She chuckles. “Late night snack attacks?”
“You. Being here. This is all I want in the world.”
She snuggles closer and I rest my head on top of hers.
“Anya,” I whisper.
“Yes,” she whispers back.
“When I ask you it won’t be just because you want it. I’ll be asking because I can’t stand the thought of you not being mine.”

ANYA
“I officially call this Girl’s Night to order!”
Mya grabs Ari’s arm and pulls her down on the couch. “Will you sit down and hush so Anya can give us the scoop.”
We’re all gathered here in Ariana’s apartment on a Monday evening, drinking margaritas that Casey made. Jessi already knows what happened but I figured I’d better get the rest of the girls together so I’d only have to tell the whole crazy story one more time.
“You cannot keep us in suspense. The entire office is buzzing about James running into the event looking like he got mugged or something. What the hell happened?” Mya asks.
I snickered. Today at work was more than a little awkward. Poor Law spent most of the day hiding in his office. Whenever anyone asked me about the event I just shrugged.
