Called By the Dark - Page 37

Scarface just stares at him.

“Disobedience. I shared knowledge with humans when I was told not to. I fell in love with a human woman when I was told not to.” He leans down closer. “Knowledge. And love. Those were my sins, and I was banished to Hell for them. What makes you think you’re worthy of anything less than that?”

“I… I…”

“I am going to do to you what I wished to do to you the night I discovered my mate’s body, a hole in her chest, her heart turned to bloody pulp, because you shot her,” Gaderel says. “You showed her no mercy. And so you shall receive no mercy. There are demons ready to receive you.”

With that, Gaderel snatches Scarface by the throat, lifts him into the air, then rams his fist into the man’s mouth.

Then, with a viciously powerful yank, he rips Scarface’s spine out through his mouth.

I manage to suppress the urge to scream, but my heart thunders swiftly in my chest, so hard I feel I might faint.

And yet…it is only the shock of the sight that affects me. Not the act itself.

Gaderel drops the pieces of this human monster on the floor and meets my gaze, cautious, questioning.

My blood sings with dark delight, and a slow smile spreads across my face. “My love.”

He is next to me, scooping me into his arms in an instant. “My sweet queen.”

Our mouths meet in a deep, desperate kiss.

In the distance, we both hear it—sirens.

“It is time,” Gaderel says, and leads me by the hand to the balcony. He slips off his black overcoat and hands it to me, then unsheathes his majestic black wings.

He scoops me in his arms and flaps his wings, rising to the balcony banister to get some leverage. He gazes down at me.

“Ready?”

I let out a heady laugh, clutching him. “As long as you promise not to let me fall.”

His laugh joins mine, echoing into the heavens.

“I will never let you fall.”

Outside the Nickel building, I lean against my unmarked police car to catch my breath and wait for the nausea to pass. I’ve been a cop for a while, and living in Draco City exposes me to some of the worst things humans can do to one another.

But tonight I saw, without a shred of doubt, the most horrifying murder I will ever see. To the point where I’m questioning my ability to continue doing this job.

Nine homicides tonight, of which three victims are the three suspects I’ve been keeping tabs on for the case I’m working. The three suspects of the Shakers Club massacre that claimed the lives of every customer in the club that night, the club manager, and every single employee working that night.

With the exception of my sister.

Six gang members were found deceased with no signs of violence in the foyer of the penthouse owned by Willy Bristol, one of my suspects. His brother Allan was discovered naked in a bedroom, wearing a ball gag with a severed hand and his throat slashed. He bled out all over the floor.

His older brother Willy hasn’t officially been identified as the second victim yet, but I’m waiting for expedited dental records to confirm that the splattered human remains on the street are his. Building surveillance video shows a man plummeting from somewhere near the top of the building, if not the very top floor.

An anonymous call came in an hour ago when we were still working the Bristol scene, a hysterical woman from an untraceable number reporting a murder in the penthouse of the Nickel building. When we arrived and saw what awaited us in the middle of the living room floor, my mind refused to accept it.

A human spine, ripped cleanly from the bloody body lying next to it.

I’m still grappling to understand. It would require inhuman strength to do what I saw.
