Serpent's Claim (Serpent's Touch 2) - Page 64

“Then so it should be.”

“Kyllen.” I shifted to face him fully. “If I have to choose, I’ll always choose you over the crown. Without a doubt or a second thought. There is nothing and no one in the world more important to me than you.”

“I know. But wanting both doesn’t make you a bad person.” He smiled. “You can have it all.”

I could easily lose it all, too.

The sky had grayed with the first rays of sunrise. The birds in the tree branches outside the windows chirped, greeting it. Still, I clung to Kyllen, the man I had thought I’d lost before and risked losing for good, now.

“I need to go.” With a tender hug and a kiss, he freed himself from my arms. “I have to sneak back to my room before the lake gets too crowded. No one can know I’ve been here or that I love you. No one can know you love me back.”

He got out of the nest and searched for his shirt. I watched him getting dressed, wishing I had the power to keep him with me.

“Announce the tournament, my queen, and set the date as soon as possible. There’s no need to wait.”

“Kyllen.” I climbed out of the nest and walked into his arms for one last hug.

He kissed me, holding me close for a little while longer. “I won’t be able to see you before the tournament. Not sure how I'll manage that.”

“Promise me you’ll be careful,” I begged. “I want you to win, but I want you alive even more.”

He grinned, shaking his head. “I’d rather not make another promise, sweet pea. I’ve made so many, it’s getting harder to keep track of them all. Just trust me on this—I have no problem risking my life, but I can never lose you again.”
