Tilly - Page 25

Tilly

Istayedhomethe entire weekend, not one night of clubbing. All I wanted was to feel the safety of my apartment. But now it was Monday, and I stood outside the large skyscraper building as grey clouds swollen with rain hovered over me and pedestrians almost ran into me, rushing to get to work before the rain started.

As I reached the office entrance, my breathing quickened, and my heart rate jumped. Wind whirled around me and I tightened the belt around my waist as I looked up the many floors. I spun in the opposite direction, striding to the coffee shop opposite the office. Needing caffeine before I saw them again.

As I stood in the queue and waited to be served, I bounced because my feet ached in these stupid high heels that I insisted on wearing. I finally ordered my coffee and took a seat for the few minutes’ wait. After the weekend I couldn’t stomach food, but luckily coffee was still my saviour.

My mind constantly drifted to his eyes, his voice, his scent. Why wasn’t he hiding from me?

“Latte venti for Tilly,” the server called, and I jumped.

“I’m sure they’re normally not that fast,” I grumbled.

It was still a little early, so I took a seat and stared out of the window. Sipping and watching, more wondering if I should go home and decide on my future or be the strong woman I’d made myself be and stand proud.

I finished the last of my drink, grasped my purse, making my knuckles white.. I had a feeling the contents of this bag would diminish quicker than usual. But I pushed my shoulders back and strolled to the building where I worked, waited at the lift, and took the next ride up to my floor.

The minute I got to the floor, I strode to my office, glancing into Sandy’s room as I passed, but it seemed I was the first one here today. I pushed open the door and shut it quietly behind me, and reached for the light switch before someone snatched both my wrists in a large palm.

“Fuck,” I screamed.

“We never got that far, darling,” Jackson whispered in my ear. “Why did you leave when we were having fun?”

“I’m a grown woman and can come and go as I please,” I said, my voice calm, but my heart was thumping against my ribcage.

He moved closer, backing me against the office door so we were flush against each other, invading my personal space as he locked us in place until there was no air between us.

My eyes fluttered at his scent. It was male, but was still sweet and sensual, and seeped into my system, and I felt drunk, definitely unsteady.

I need to take another suppressant, or something was wrong with them—or me.

“Let me go!” I hissed.

To my shock, the blond god did just that, stepping back and picking up my purse that had landed on the floor. I slapped my hand to my chest with a gasp while I tried to regulate my racing heartbeat.

“You need to learn self-defence,” he said.

“You could always not pounce on me,” I retorted, shaking my head in disbelief. He pushed away a wisp of hair that escaped from my ponytail in the struggle. I fought to stop my head from turning into his touch.

“Why did you leave that night?” he asked.

I couldn’t tell him why. I couldn’t tell him anything about me because of who he was. He looked at my face like he knew something about me. Also, because a bit of a fumble was all I could give.

“My carriage was about to expire,” I said, and he barely contained his grin.

I glanced at his hand and noticed he still wrapped it around my wrist. I cleared my throat and pulled at my arm. His gaze pierced mine as though he wanted me to acknowledge what we’d done.

Maybe he wanted hoping for his second orgasm.

I wanted to finish this with him, not his number two. He was now my boss and an alpha, and I had to forget about it. Being alone with him once was enough for my need for a cold shower and a serious mental telling off, of which I gave myself both when I got home that night.

“I... I,” I mumbled.

“You thought I was a beta?” he said, answering for me and stared at me with open amusement.

I put my palms on his chest and pushed him away with force. “Yes, I don’t fuck alphas.”

He smiled, and I wanted to wipe it off his face.

“Scared in case you find a beast,” he said. “Or scared that you’ll want an alpha more than you want to admit.”

“I don’t want to get involved with a bonded alpha.” His scent marking of me was obvious, and I stepped one foot to the side. I knew it and he did, too.

“One, I’m not bonded...” He leaned closer to me, his lips touching my ear. “And two, you’re already involved.”

I cleared my throat. “Or, I just prefer to stick with the safety of my designation,” I said, ignoring his ‘involvement,’ insinuation.

“Your designation,” he said, and frowned. His smile had grown impatient. He stepped one foot forward, cupped my chin, tilting it up to him and stared at me for a moment. His sapphire coloured eyes now seemed to have a golden rim around them.

“Yes,” I whispered.

He inhaled at my neck, my ear, lowering his head to my chest. My breathing stuttered.

“Strange you say that,” he said and hesitated, looking at my eyes again and stroking my wrist with his thumb. “Me being here has dilated your eyes, your skin is clammy, and all I can smell is omega.”

We stared at each other. My breathing was heavy, my chest rising and falling too quickly as I kept waiting for Jackson to do something obvious, hopefully letting me know he was another man there that night.

He had to be.

He knew my name before I told him.

He knew I was an omega.

“Maybe I need those self-defence classes,” I said. In fact, I did. I’d taken them when I was younger but slacked on my learning. “Maybe weapons training, too.”

“I’ll teach you,” he said without faltering.

“Oh no, I’ll find a club,” I said.
