Tilly
“Tilly,”Sandybarked.I sighed and calmly raised my eyes to meet hers as she stood against the doorframe. “Be in my office in five minutes.”
I swallowed. Glancing at my purse, my fingers itched to touch the zipper, to feel the pouch filled with my tablets. I needed one, but I promised Luca I wouldn’t take them any longer when he took me home. He wanted to knot me, but that wasn’t happening with suppressants inside me.
But right now, as Sandy stood in front of me, I was sure I didn’t make a wonderful decision. I needed the goodness inside the pouch, something to give me the strength to stand up to the alpha and not wither in her gaze.
My heart was in my mouth as I walked into her office after the required five minutes.
“Hi,” I said, taking a seat in front of her desk.
“Tilly, glad you came.” Sandy grinned, showing a wide row of brilliant white teeth.
She stood and strolled around the desk, getting too near to me. Her nose sniffed around my hair, my face. She stopped and inhaled deeply.
Her eyes fluttered closed and my heart hammered in my chest. Blood rushed through my veins and I wanted to take every suppressant in my bag.
It was too late.
“Why did I not smell you before?” she said. “I always liked you, always attracted to you, but as our pack wanted an omega, I didn’t make a move.”
I didn’t want a discussion with her about my use of suppressants or the de-scenting products I had in my possession and I berated myself, knowing I should never have stopped taking my pills if I wanted to survive in this alpha world.
“I take it your new bosses know you’re an omega,” she stated. “Do you know I was part of that pack once?”
I shook my head. It was a lie. I’d heard the tale on the company grapevine.
“Have they told you?” she asked, leaving her question unfinished. I had a feeling she was talking about the same thing that whirled in my gut. My stomach was turning over as I wondered what she knew had happened to my family.
“Told me what?”
“About Cruz.”
“No,” I whispered.
“It’s just clicked, Tilly,” she said.
I blew out a breath. I had to know what she knew, and it was time to take matters into my own hands and as Sandy was the only one talking; she was my only opportunity.
“What do you know what happened?” I asked. I hoped this would be simple.
“Come for lunch with me and I’ll tell you everything.”
“What time?” I chewed my bottom lip, wondering if this was such a good idea.
“Twelve o’clock. Meet me in the lobby.”
“I’m not going in a car anywhere, only to the cafe over the road,” I said. I wasn’t taking any chances with Sandy, not now she knew who I really was.
All I wanted to hear was what she knew about my father’s death and the disappearance of my mother and sister.
I plastered on a fake smile and rose from my chair. Because as much as I didn’t think she would try to take me, I wasn’t taking the chance. “Twelve,” I said, softly. Pulling open the door as I grasped the handle in a death grip as I pushed my shoulders back and tried to rein in my omega weakness.
“See you later.” She held her mobile in her hand as I took one last look at her as she settled herself back into her office chair. She pushed it backward with her heeled shoes and spun to look out of the window.
I pushed my mobile in my bag, grabbed my scarf and wrapped it around my neck. I wasn’t taking one chance of being bitten by a needy alpha wanting an omega who wasn’t hers. Sandy’s sudden interest was unnerving, but I didn’t think she would do anything to jeopardise her job.
I threw my crossover bag over my shoulder and waved at Lisa as I left the office. When I got to the lift, my phone rang, and I saw Luca’s name on the screen. My thumb hovered over his name as I contemplated whether to answer, but deciding it was easier to pacify him than to ignore him, I typed a message out to him.
Me: See you later.
The doors to the lift opened, and I strode in, placing my mobile into my coat pocket and watched each floor light up and darken as I thought of what I was about to discover.
I blinked my eyes hard, holding them shut to stop the tears that sprouted, but failed when they cascaded down my cheeks. The thought of being so close to the truth was overwhelming.
I sucked in a few breaths as the doors opened. Calm and bravery returned, and I pushed my shoulders back and strode out of the lifts. Then I rushed to get the fresh air I suddenly desired. The doors slid open, and I stepped into the cold air and leaned against the wall outside the entrance.
“We meet again,” the baritone voice said, and I spun to his voice.
It took three words to place his voice. He was one of the gang of men who took my sister.
“Sorry? Do I know you?” I asked, my voice a whisper. I smiled and shook my head to keep up the pretence.
“We’ve met in Freeze, the beta nightclub...” He paused as he perused me. He looked up and down at my outfit. His lips curved on one side as he sniffed in the air. I still dressed like an alpha, but my scent was thoroughly omega. And as he inhaled my omega scent, I knew he was an alpha.
Shit.
“Sorry, I need to go,” I said.
“You need to come with me,” he said. “Your sister is in danger.”
I stared at him, my eyes widened. Severely aware of the threat of this man. I shook my head and licked my lips. “You’ve got the wrong person. I’m an only child. Who are you wanting?”
He snarled. “Stop fucking with me.”
I wanted to ask more, but omegas were always being lured into difficult positions, and as I scoured my gaze up and down his tall, wide body, that was exactly what he planned.
He grinned. “So it’s you?” he said, not sure if it was a question or confirming something, he thought. He knew I had a sister because he knew who I was.
I shook my head. “No idea what you mean.”
