“For how long?”
“If I have my way and we get along and enjoy each other, forever.”
“But you don’t even like me.”
“I’ve never disliked you. I wanted you from the first time I saw you, but I misunderstood a conversation I overheard. It made you sound like a gold digger.”
She gasped. “When?”
“You girls were in Faith’s room. It was the same day we met. You see, I’ve had two failed relationships. The first one was when I was a cop. She left me for a lawyer because I didn’t make enough money.”
“I’m sorry. That had to have been horrible.”
He nodded. “The second woman I got involved with was when I was head of security and making good money, but I caught her trying to grab the attention of a much richer man. She didn’t care that he was in his sixties. She just liked his money.”
She squeezed his hand. “That had to have hurt, but what does that have to do with me?”
“I heard you talk about wanting a rich daddy, and that’s all it took. I didn’t give you a chance to explain, and I’m very sorry about that. Do you think you can give me another chance?”
She rested her head against the headrest and then nodded. “I think I’d like to try.”
He brought her hand up to his mouth and kissed her knuckles. “You won’t regret it. I’m going to make you the happiest little on the planet.”
He liked the slight smile on her face. Now he was getting somewhere with her. Hopefully, by the time they got home, he’d have her out of her shell.
