Chapter Seventeen

Kyla helped Faith organize the breakroom in the building, but her thoughts were on her daddy.

They’d been together a few months, and it seemed that every passing day the last week, he grew more and more distant. She thought they’d been getting so close, but something changed, and he wouldn’t tell her what it was.

What bothered her the most was he was pushing her off on other people every day, just like what happened before, and she didn’t know what to do about it.

“What are you thinking so hard about?”

Kyla glanced at Faith and shrugged. She didn’t know if she could talk about it or not. She’d thought a few times that she was just being overly sensitive.

“I think Duncan is getting tired of me.” There, she said it out loud.

Faith gasped, grabbed her hand, and pulled her over to one of the tables. “Tell me why you think that.”

Kyla looked down at her hands. “It’s just a feeling. I feel like he’s pushing me off onto other people.”

“Why do you think that?”

“Because for the last week or so, he’s had me with other people during the day instead of in his office like he did before. We don’t even have lunch together anymore. He drops me off with whoever I’ll be with, and then he comes and gets me at the end of the day.”

“Have you guys fought?”

Kyla shook her head. “No.”

“Are you still having sex?”

Kyla felt herself blush. “Yes. That hasn’t changed.”

“Have you asked him if something’s bothering him?”

“Kind of, but I’m afraid to push it.”

Faith gripped her hands. “You need to ask him before you drive yourself crazy.”

“I know. I will try tonight.”

“The sooner, the better,” Faith said. “Let’s get this done, and then we can go watch a movie in my office.”

Kyla smiled. The office was more like a playroom. The only reason she got away with calling it that was because it had a desk.

The girls were playing a game when the guys came to get them.

“Are you ready to go, sweetheart?”

Kyla nodded and then looked at Faith, who mouthed, Ask him.

She took Duncan’s hand and let him lead her out of the building and into his car. She stared at him on the drive home. “Is there anything wrong?” she asked.

He glanced at her and frowned. “No.”

She didn’t believe him. “Are you mad at me?”

“No, sweetheart.”

“You’d tell me if you were, right?”

He patted her hand. “Of course. What are you hungry for?”
