Daddy's Little Sweetheart (Daddy 15)
It was obvious that he was lying to her, and it broke her heart. He didn’t have to say the words to her because his actions gave her the answers she needed.
Any appetite she’d had was gone. “I don’t care. I’m not that hungry.”
“Did you eat a big lunch?”
She wanted to say so badly that he wouldn’t have to ask if he’d just let her be close. Instead, she shook her head and looked out her window.
He sighed, and she waited for him to say anything, but the rest of the ride was silent. Every minute that passed made her stomach tighten.
She followed him into the house.
“How about we order pizza?”
“Sure,” she said and walked away into her playroom, where she stood in the middle of the room ad looked around. The thought that she’d gladly give it all up if she knew Duncan loved her and wanted to keep her made her sad.
“I ordered it, sweetheart.”
She looked over her shoulder at him. “Okay.”
“Do you want to play until it gets here?”
She shrugged and turned back to the room. When his arm came around her waist, and he pulled her up against him, she sighed.
“Is everything okay?”
She wanted to yell no, it wasn’t, but she was afraid of what he’d do. “No. I’m good. I think I’ll go take a bath.”
“I’ll get it ready for you.”
She grabbed ahold of his hand. “No, it’s okay. I’ve got it.”
“Are you sure I can’t help?”
Something was wrong, or he would have insisted he take care of her, and it made her slightly nauseous. “No, I can do it.”
He pressed a kiss to her forehead. “I’ll be in my office and listening for the pizza so you can relax.”
“Okay.”
Kyla watched him walk away as a deep sorrow filled her. She was so angry at herself for letting herself think he’d want her forever. Her heart was breaking into a million pieces, and it was all her fault. It felt like there was a ball of lead in her stomach, and she could feel the emotions want to break free, but the tears wouldn’t come.
She wanted to talk to Jenna, but she didn’t want to make her friend feel sad.
When he came to get her for dinner, she hadn’t moved from the spot.
“Sweetheart, the pizza’s here.”
She looked over her shoulder. “I’m not hungry.”
“I thought you were going to take a bath.”
“I changed my mind.”
He crossed his arms over his chest. “What’s going on with you?”
“You.”
“What about me?” he asked.
