“So, when are you going to see her?” Leo asks.
“God,” I say. “Just give it a rest.”
They just laugh. So, the problem is that I had already planned to see Lena today, but I’ve got to get past the guys thinking I did it because of their prodding. That’s irritating as hell, but after a few more sips, I realize I would correct a little girl if she treated things this way, if she did or didn’t do something because of what someone might think instead of whether it’s the right thing to do.
I stand and say, “Okay, I’m off.”
“Need directions?”
“I know where she lives,” I say and walk quickly away as they laugh. I make my way to my car quickly and hop in. A quarter-mile from the club, I’m not irritated with the guys anymore. All that matters is I’m going to see my little girl.
And it’s about time she discovers that’s who she is, my little girl.
