Keeping Grace - Page 10

TY

Ihated to admit that I was jealous of Scott. He got to spend the whole day with this beautiful woman while I had to go to town for supplies and try to dodge a clingy woman who never got the hint.

Why couldn’t Liam have asked me for help with the tour?

I’d been surprised to find her with Scott in Jameson’s stall. I couldn’t remember the last time Scott wanted to be alone with a woman. I think he tried one relationship since Hannah, his fiancée who had passed away, but it had failed miserably. That was five years ago. He wasn’t ready for another relationship back then, but maybe this was a good sign.

Maybe he was ready now. We’d talked about wanting to share a woman, but if he couldn’t learn to love someone after Hannah, I didn’t know where that left us.

I definitely wouldn’t mind if he was ready now. Grace was gorgeous and sexy, and already I could tell she had a sense of humor. If she was anything like her sister, she was strong and independent, too. So far, Grace sounded more and more like my dream woman.

Scott wasn’t sure he could put his whole heart into another woman after Hannah died in a rare barrel racing accident. He’d finally admitted to me that he wanted to share so our woman would get all the love she deserved—love he didn’t think he would be able to provide.

I wanted to share a woman because, growing up, I saw how my father treated my mother. She bent over backward for him, and he showed her no love. He controlled everything she did and continuously paraded women in front of her, telling her she wasn’t good enough. I wanted to make sure the woman I ended up with had all the love in the world.

My gaze shifted to Grace as we walked to the dining hall, the last of the day’s sunlight shining off her brown hair. I couldn’t help but grab desperately at the hope that clung to my heart. Maybe she would be the one to help change our lives.

I beat the two of them to the door and opened it for them. Grace and Scott paused just inside and then made a beeline for Jessie. The unsuspecting woman turned, and her eyes widened.

“How was the picnic?” Jessie asked cautiously.

“I think you forgot the whipped cream,” Grace responded with a raised eyebrow.

I had no clue what they were talking about, but I was looking forward to hearing this story based on how red Jessie’s face turned.

“Maybe next time, add scotch. I’m not a fan of wine,” Scott added.

Okay, now I really needed to hear this story.

“Of course, of course. You just let me know when, and I’ll get you whatever you want.” Jessie said before she turned and hurried into the kitchen.

“What was that about?” I asked when we finally sat down at our table with our plates piled high with Shephard’s pie. This was one of my favorite dishes that Jessie made. I was a meat and potatoes kind of guy.

“I told you Liam had asked me to do a tour today of the property for a special guest. Well, that guest was Grace,” Scott paused.

“Go on.” I prompted after he didn’t seem like he was going to continue.

“I didn’t know who she was until maybe a half hour in when she yelled at me about being grumpy and took off on Storm. Once we got everything cleared up and rode around, we stopped and had lunch.” He paused again.

He needed to just spit the story out. So far, I didn’t see what the hype was about.

“Lunch that was prepared by Jessie and Liam.” He glanced at the kitchen for a second.

“I feel like I’m still missing something.” My eyebrows drew together.

Grace looked up at me through her long lashes and sighed. “Picture this. We had a picnic blanket, strawberries, tiny sandwiches, macaroons and wine, under a big tree by the lake.”

“Sounds like a setting for a date.”

“Exactly,” Scott blurted.

I couldn’t help the laughter that boomed from my chest. I could only imagine how uncomfortable Scott was.

“Stop laughing.” Grace smacked my shoulder. I could see her fighting a smile.

“I’m sorry. I’m just picturing this. How did you guys get from there to here?”

Both Grace and Scott looked over my shoulder at the front door, smug looks on their faces. I glanced back and saw Liam standing in the doorway. He stood still for a few seconds before he composed himself and then shook his head before he turned and left again.
